Help - New to Lancers. What do you see?
Good evening people, I am back with photos and questions. Please forgive my ignorance. No questions is a dumb question in my book.
I am attaching some photos, the first will be the engine compartment. What do you see? besides the CAI (Injen) Since I do not know anything about these vehicles, I am trying to see what the trained eye sees.
What are these holes in the air intake? Any idea why this would have been done? I see most of the air intakes are installed either in a different location, or with a scoop to bring the air to the center of the engine compartment.
Also, what is this red wire leading to the battery? Where does it go and what is it for? The last photo shows where it stops. What is that thing next to it?
The battery was drained after 3 days of being parked. Not sure if this will be a reoccurring issue or not at this point.

looks like a grounding kit was improperly installed...the holes in the air filter are to allow dirt into the engine, because retard, the fake AN fittings on the upper rad hose are cheesy, and where does the line from the PCV (positive crank-case ventillation) go?
you have a short somewhere if the battery is dying...

What Crans said.
You got yourself and improperly installed grounding kit (red wire). Some autozone engine bay "dress up"-crap on your upper radiator pipe and crank case line. Im also wondering what that is that looks like its T'ed off from your PCV line in your first pic, looks like a braided line with red tape on one end. Where is that going? And idk if Id call that an intake. The Injen for our car is a full metal pipe with a bend in it. You got some silicone couplers there instead of an intake. As for the holes that serves no purpose looks like they were trying to fit that filter to whatever pipe they are using for your airflow sensor.
Just for kicks try disconnecting that grounding kit and see if the battery drains again. I'd look into a new intake, getting that dress up crap out of there, and following that line we mentioned.

i believe the t from the pcv line runs to the gauge in the car. does that make sense?

as far as the ground system goes...see as follows.
neg to fender. neg to block near plugs. plug area to disconnected one, to the area near exhaust manifold, then to left fender

As far as the intake goes..looks like a definite homemade job. the holes do not go all the way through to the inside of the filter.

The section after the filter is the original i think 2.75 if i remember right, hand cut, then it goes to a 3.25"

The battery is holding, it may have not been related to anything, before i disconnect the ground system, i want to figure out where it is supposed to be connected. Is there some sort of module that is supposed to me connected to it? From what I see online they all have a red or blue box attached.
shoot me over an email address i have tons of photos if these arent good enough.
oh and fans are intermittent. i ordered the control module for the fans.
I still have the crunch in 2nd to 3rd also, i havent ordered the transmission fluid, im afraid to change it, what if it kills the transmission? Does changing out fluid do that? or its an old wives tale?

You guys done think this is just a short ram air intake? just homemade? If the holes dont go through, and the car seems to be running fine. why go spend money on a legit air intake?
I think I may want to return it to the factory diameter on the turns...perhaps thats why I should buy a new one. instead of finding parts that will work. one band aide for another i guess.

PCV line tap: yes that would give you a vacuum source for a pressure gauge...why you need a manifold pressure gauge without running boost, for anything other than troubleshooting is beyond me...
Intake: go back to OEM, or get a legit aftermarket intake if you like the noise...that thing is ghetto (no offence) and also MAF housing diameter is very important to how the ECU manages air/fuel ratio...if it's not scaled (through ECU tuning) the engine may not be "running fine".
grounding kits are normally just low gauge bonding wires....there should not be any module...there should not be loose ends, though it's possible it was installed to correct a faulty ground that could not be repaired...but just make sure that the engine and transmission are bonded to the chassis, and that the battery has a good chassis ground...
transmission oil can only do damage if you use incorrect type, or specification.
