Question about RRM Short Ram Intake...
Question about RRM Short Ram Intake...
I'm new not only to cars and driving and general but also you this site so please don't attack me. My first car was an OZ Rally and I have a 5 day old 2005 RalliArt. I didn't want to put any money into modding the OZ because... well... I'd have to drop quite a bit of money into it just to make it do what the RalliArt does!
Anyway, I've finally got the stick shift down and I'm looking at purchasing the RRM Short Ram Intake from the RRM site. I'm happy to see that it's relatively cheap. It's not easy for a high school kid to cough up money on parts but I think I can manage on this. My question is, the site advertises that it (and I quote) " Expect to drop a full second in 0 - 60 mph times with this intake as the MIVEC kicks in and this engine culps in air!"
Come on now... A full second? That almost seems unheard of! Especially for a short ram! Am I right? For anyone that has this intake, is this correct? Regardless of whether or not it is, I still intend on buying it.
A few more questions:
1. What kind of sound can I expect from this? I'm hoping for a nice little rumble. Can the sound (if any) be heard from not only inside the car but from the road as well?
2. How easy is this to install. I dont know the first thing about installing parts but my dad is an engineer and the Mitsubishi Plant here in Normal, Illinois. He does all the work on my car (Neons, etc.) I know he can handle it but... correct me if I'm wrong... This looks EXTREMELY SIMPLE! It looks as if I could have it installed in about 5 minutes time. Am I correct?
Thanks for your help guys!

The RA does gain a decent amount of power from the intake. A full second is arguable, but there is a noticable difference. As for sound, there's a whisling vacuum sound just before MIVEC kicks in, then after that the engine just roars, and starts whisling again around 5500 and up.
Yes, it is extremely simple to install. Removing the old airbox is straight forward. However, if you car is like most of ours, you will run into issues with removing the two screws for the MAF sensor. Those suckers are in tight. I used a set of channel locks to get them off. If you just use a screwdriver, you'll probably strip them.

I think they mean if you buy intake/ecu/exhaust and or downpipe you will drop a second in 0-60.
Yes you will notice a difference in sound I was shocked at how it sounded after the install still havn't lost the grin on my face.

at one time they had a little explination about that. If I remember right it said they were getting .6-.8 sec. faster and then they were just rounding up to a full sec. faster. I don't think anyone will ever get a full second off with just a SRI and I think .8 is just as unlikely, although I_Rep did run a 15.03 1/4 mile with just a CAI and a short shifter.

What's the CAI put out? Anyone know?

Like I said I think .8 is unlikely and .6 is still probably a stretch. I'm gonna get one too. I'm not saying its bad. And I like SRI's. They seem to have better throtle responce then the CAI's although they don't get as high of a HP peak but we are talking 1-2 hp and with the SRI you can get to the hp a small bit faster.
its easy to install... the power gain isnt that big... but it could be described as 'improved throttle response' i guess... the sound is amazing...
when i get my gtech ill try and do a few 0-60 runs to see what i can get with my short ram (my only engine mod)
