K&N Drop-In Air Filter

What kind of gains can be expected (if any) from a K&N drop in air filter? A friend of mine in an automatic Grand AM GT said he noticed a slight gain... he said it was worth it for the low cost.

Just wondering what your guys' thoughts were on this...

My car is brand new (800 miles) and completely stock at the moment performance wise btw... It's a 5 speed as well, if that matters any.

tbh the only way you'll see a difference from an intake is to go with a CAI...

Are you saying that the only way you'll see gain from a drop-in is if you have a CAI? or the only way to see gains period is from a CAI?

What about the Short Ram? Dollar for dollar I'd go with that ANY DAY! I plan on buying that any day as well

I wasn't stating you wouldn't see gains... just not noticeable from a drop in... atleast not real noticeable.

If you have a Cai you don't need a drop in. I was just stating that if you want the best gains possible I'd get a CAI.

Short rams again better than stock, but are VERY suceptable to heat soak... so on a warm sunny day where you'll be driving a while... you could actually hurt performance with a SRI... just my .02 cents

you will see gains, but not as much as SRI or CAI. Or stockbox is restrictive... so putting a drop in won't yeld a whole lot, but ull notice a difference and sound.

I'm in the exact same position as RalliTrav05, and I've been lookin' at Accel's Kool Blue filter. My dad's heard a lot of bad things about CAI's, but mainly on his car (WRX), so he wants me to just get the best filter possible. He's used a Kool Blue forever and it shows considerable gains and instead of replacing it, you use the cleaning kit supplied with it and it's like new. Any thoughts?

Keep it on topic, folks.

A drop in won't yield that much power. It's a better investment to put in a little bit more money and get a SRI. Won't be as good as a CAI, but the SRI is a better bang for buck when compared with a drop-in.

Other users on the board say it produces a very nice sound as well. Add in a 5 min installation and it's the best option if you ask me. I'll have mine in a few weeks and I'll let you know how it goes! Good luck!

btw... ur dad has a WRX and he let you buy a Mitsubishi? Thats surprising!

Better yet... how could you let your dad get a WRX?!?!?!
Just kidding- nice car... but EVO is better
It sounds like you are already set on at least getting the SRI. If so, why are you even considering the drop in filter??? That's a big waste of money if you are going to put the SRI in shortly after. The purpose of the the drop in firlter is that you don't have to replace it ever. There is a performance gain, but it is little The main purpose is to save money in the long run. Having it for 3 months isn't going to save you money.

Actually I don't have much room to talk because I have a K&N filter that I bought about a year ago and I plan on getting the SRI here in a few weeks. But my girl has the Outlander so I'll just put the K&N in her car.
