? about oil
The fram tough guard is an OK filter but the build quality on all the others isn't quite up to par with the rest of the crowd. Consider purolator (or however you spell it), mobile 1, or hastings.
5w-30 is perfect for year round up north.
I use 10w-40 in the south during the summer because 95+ degrees with the A/C blowing in Atlanta traffic really heats things up. I actually saw the "dummy" temperature needle start to move from it's normal resting spot once.
Synthetic does reduce friction and allow for more power, but the difference is not justified by the cost. I do it because I plan to put 250K on this car.
I get 32-33 mpg on the highway (below MIVEC) that I attribute mostly to synthetic gear lube and oil.
HOWEVER, if you plan on selling the car before 100K or you are leasing, don't bother.

ok had to pipe up with something - I've been told that if you do switch from normal to synthetic, then you really have to keep using synthetic for the life of the car (i.e. - you can't just switch back to "normal" oil later). Anyone else know if this is true?
False, I just don't know why you'd want to switch back. Price, maybe. If you were broke and needed an oil change, filling it with conventional oil would be better than not changing it.
