hi, i have read the noob sticky so dont worry LOL. Anyways what I wanted to know what if it is ok to switch from norm oil to Synthetic? and if so where can i get redline or royal purlple? also what weight should i run if i live in mn?
It's fine to switch. I did my first oil change with 50/50 and then switched to Mobile 1 on my last change. I run 5/30. For MN I would recommend something heavier, even though summer is coming up.
You can sometimes get Royal Purple at AutoZone, etc. For Redline I'd check any local performance shops. Most of the ones in my area carry it.

Anyone that tells you that you can't run synthetic right away is on crack. If MN stand for Minnisota, I'd use 5w-30 year round.
Royal Purple, Redline, and Amsoil are all TRUE synthetic. Some speculate that Mobile 1 isn't truely synthetic, but it doesn't seem to turn anywhere near as quickly as Castrol Syntec (which is verified to not be TRUELY synthetic).

I switched to synthetic when I changed my oil for the first time. I'm in WI, and I run 5w-30 year-round. I haven't seen Royal Purple in any Autozone around here, but I did see it in Denver. Of course, Napa out there carried GM Synchromesh, too.

As far as synthetic oil is conerned, dont think it will give you "more" power. That is just a myth. I have run plain ol pennzoil in all of my cars, never had problems and theyhave all run great.
If you are looking for Royal Purple go to Pep Boys, I know the one off 494 in Inver Grove carries it. Synthetic oil will give you more horsepower, I have seen it on a dyno but only 1-2 more at peak because of reduced friction, it's nothing to really get excited about. (I have seen it a few times in the power pages section of import tuner where they changed from a conventional 5-30 to a synthetic and usually get 1-2 HP)

Gaining HP shouldn't be your reason to switch to synthetic. The primary benefits of synthetic are that it is a purpose-built lubricant that does a far better job than dino can, which means that it protects your engine better so that it can last longer. The other reason is that it far more resistent to breaking down, so it lasts longer, which negates the extra cost. For every synthetic oil change you'd have to do 2+ dino oil changes.
If you're one of those who uses full synthetic and changes your oil every 3k, give your money to me instead of throwing it away.

That's true, but when you go too long between changes, you have to start worrying about the oil filter plugging. Using a high quality filter (ie NOT fram) is a must.
