Question Hmmmmm

Was talking to a new tech we hired who is also into Mitsubishi's and he said it's almost best to keep the factory airbox and try using a conical filter inside of it. He said the filter should remain cooler inside of the box versus close to the hot engine components. He said the airbox has some kind of silencer that can be removed so you can still hear the intake.

I believe that the silencer is the bottom part of the intake. And the air is cooler that an intake because it's drawing air from outside and not near the engine. Its not the box that's keeping it cool. CAI is better than the stock box, but it has a price. It's more the high flow filter that will help your engine. So he's right and wrong.

I had a SRI on my 02 Lancer OZ and was trying to decide what to do with the 05 RA.

I'd just keep the airbox and get a highflow WORKS filter. If you want the SRI, then go with the custom setup everyone is trying. Keep the black thing that let's air in your engine, and have a hole cut in the heatshield. I'd go Highflow filter though.

If you're set on getting a SRI, then his suggestion is best, but may require that you build a custom SRI to make it work. Otherwise, just get a CAI.

Or you could just build an ice box for it. The more you block hot air the more horse power gains. if you have ever drove at night and it is about 60 degrees outside you can fell a higher torque value. Than if you were driving in 90 degree weather. If aftermarket is what your for go for the CAI it drops alot lower to the ground to get cooler air becase heat rises. cool air blasting off the ground is alot cooler than cramp hot and dense air off the engine. The filter doesn't change much except for th gulp of air running to your engine. I wating on a bigger maf to come out that will have your real horse power gains.

Bigger MAF wont do a thing. That was when the MAf came encased, now they come with only the sensor.

Now If it were a better engine than the G69, and the maf was encased, and the other engine aplication has a bigger opening in the casing it would be great. Thats what we used to do in PR with Mirages, we'd stuck a 2.4 galant or eclipse MAF, Or simpli modifying the existing one with better air flow

If theres a trick to it, it would be to place the maf as close as posible to the filter, contrary to what thexisting CAIs as of now do. Ive been wondering this long time. In my Mirage, it worked wayyyy better with the maf far away from the throttle body

If you did a throttle body change that would give youalot more horse power too. But I don't think they make one for our cars. Oh yeah and in lighten me on the maf encased thing I don't understand?? On my lincoln mark 8 I change my MAF from a 80cfm to 90 cfm and a 5 hp gain. And it was made into the airbox just like ours. Isn't it the same??

Do you know if he's talking about the one on the underside of intake tube (like in this thread), or the one attached to the airbox itself?

And is it safe to remove both?

The encased MAF thing. If you go a little back with mitsus, the maf previous to 2003 on all models, came with boxy looking mafs. These were boxy were the actual sensor was,and it came on a platic tubing just like the Ralliart, with the difference that, in the RA you can take the actual sensor from the tubing (2 screws). So, in the earlier Mirages(1.8)and Lancer(2.0), you had the option of swapping for a 2.4(galant, Tero Sport) MAf, thanx to the increased diameter in the MAF Opening. I think that it gave it 5 mm, and even more if you took the NON READING part of the little screens before the Maf sensor.

and in the Ralliart, since its the biggest 4 cyl engine you cant swap for nothoing else. So the best option is to put the maf as close to the cold air as posible. And that would be as close to the air filter as posible
