Second Gear Grind
Second Gear Grind
For those who care, my Ralliart has started to grind going into second gear in a consistant fashion. I find this to be quite surprising. Other than 3 runs at a drag strip I haven't really driven this car all that hard. I'm due for my 22.5K service in about 1K. I think I'll have my dealer examine it then.
P.S. I am well versed in double clutching and do it on a daily basis. It was not my driving habbits.

Welcome to the club dude. Mine has been doing it forever, and it's never been raced. My dealer says it normal.... riiiight, whatever. They will be looking at it again in the near future.
Mine actually only does it at low rpms, high, its fine.

My friend and the Mistu dealer said that their synchronizers are known to stretch. But service won't take care of it because it looks like costomer abuse. Of coarse, if you try to take it in, don't mention the dragstrip stuff.

Remember that in most parts of North-America, the dealer has to prove the alledge abuse to reject a warranty claim... so you guys put on your pants and go confront the dealer and even sue their a$$ off if they won't fix your trannies!!!
You guys have to fight for your rights... the dealer won't be making costly repairs if they can avoid it without too much assle. But if there's almost no chance to legally avoid replacing the part / doing the required work, they'll do anything to avoid a court hearing at all cost. Too costly... and too much bad publicity.
My dad blew the engine in the VW... they uh, just simply forgot to check that the oil filter seal was properly in place. No big thing you know... only the oil completely draining out of the engine.
Well, anyway, of course they said it was his fault... after all, he should have checked the oil sooneer (the engine blew off 3 days after his maintenance appointment!).
Well, his lawyer only had to send one simple letter and the engine was swapped, no problem.

from what ive seen, they usually replace the synchros for us once only. however, a LOT of people on here have this problem at about 20-25k miles. i dont think its related to driving habits. some have it when they baby the car. other when they slaughter it. same time frame tho.
not that mitsu would try to ever cheat their customers out of a warranty or recall or anything.....just ask the fuso guys

Yeah... with their new 10 years plan, they'll try to get out of any warranty claim that involves anything more than putting a bit more air in the tires. It's our job to see that they do abide by their warranty contract... and local consumer protection laws too.
Here in Quebec, the law even states that irrelevant to any written waranty, if the product you bought does not remain fonctionnal for the reasonable ammount of time you would normally expect it to, the manufacturer has to replace it by a new model of the same or similar specs.
Check your local laws... and don't let Mitsubishi take advantage of you.

Some of you guys getting the grind might be able to bring your clutch peddle out a little. When you bring it out, it engadges sooner.
My evo would grind between 1st and 2nd when I first got it -- but after the adjustment it's been perfect.
Check this out, this guy describes how to adjust it on an evo. I'm sure it's the same on the RA: http://www.socalevo.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2493
