Ok, so I come home from a road trip and i'm 400 miles over my oil change. Don't think it has anything to do with this, but i just state it. Anyways I look at the bottom of my garage and I noticed some thick black oil. I thought maybe I ran over some tar or some crap. I take it into the dealership for an oil change and ask the guys there what the black oil is. Turns out its my Right Axle CV Boot Leaking. I don't know much about this and wonder how serious it is. Thankfully my warrenty covers it, but the parts won't come in till next week. Will it be safe to drive on? And wth is this anyways??? Thanks

Alright thanks man. There is one thing though. I seem to hear a "clunking" noise, and I think it's comming from my brakes. Maybe the suspension, I don't know. Anyways, it only happens when I apply the breaks, or turn to much. Do you think it has to do with this problem??

Alright, well the part is comming in a week, and i'll update then. Thanks for the help BLKRalliArt04
No I only get the clunking noise going forward. Atleast I think I do. I'll listen for it going backwards tomorrow.

A clunk like that could very well be a bad CV joint, which your boot is covering. If you lost the grease in there, and got a bunch of grime in there, it could be on its way to failing. I would definately talk to them about it... you may end up getting a new CV joint aswell. A bad CV joint will typically clunk going around a corner... some going forward, some in reverse.

It's safe to drive on for a week, for sure. My neighbor's kid has been driving with a torn boot for at least a year.
His CV joint made clicking noises at first when turning, but it's getting pretty bad now. I've got a used axle for him (his car is similar to my old ones), but he's too lazy to put it in.

Just so everybody knows...
Some of the guys might also have the same problem I'va had (and a very small number of other owners). Mitsubishi got a batch of weak springs from their supplier and if one got installed on your car, it would eventually collapse a bit (mine was collapsed about 1/2"). I whish they'd use something alse than the word collapsed to describe it though... it sounds like a catastrophe while infact, the car drives okay (you just can't notice it). Only a clunking sound through the chassis tells you that something might not be perfect.
Of course, there is no danger to the car or the people who ride in it. And this is all covered by the waranty. This is not the most common of problems either and I haven't of any other car being affected but the RA (our springs have a very specific compression ratio and we don't share these parts with other Lancers).

That sucks!!! It is a good thing that you are under warranty. I had one of my strut bolts pop out while I was driving and I had to have it towed. The tow truck driver messed it up when he put it on the flat bed. He poped the axle out of its joint. Lucky for me the CV boot wasnt damaged. I was able to pop it back in, put some more grease in the joint and replace the lock ring. No problems ever since then (knock on wood). That was about two months ago.

Yeah... if only they could have made the other spring the same height.
I saw a tuner show on TV the other day and the guy didn't like the ride height so he took the front springs off, cut them to the desired lenght and put them back on.
If only real life were that simple...
Sorry for the OT...

hm... i had clunking sounds coming from my car when turning, they replaced the outter tie rod, didn't work then they're replacing the inner tie rod. if that doesn't work then they're replacing the entire steering rack or something like that... but i'll keep an eye out for that 1/2 inch drop
