I would like to know how the heck you can afford a $17,000 car as your first?

Mine was $3000, and I had a hard time swinging that (of course, that was 15 years ago ). I was paying more for insurance per year than the car was worth.

If you buy a new car, you lose thousands of dollars in value when you drive it off the lot. If you can afford the car, insurance, gas, etc., then go for it. However, try not to drive like my neighbor's kid. He just turned 18, and he's already on his 5th car. In addition to his own, he's wrecked two cars that belonged to his Mom, and one of his brother's.

Haha I love this forum. Well I actually turned 19, and I do have a minor income. My parents are willing to chip in a big portion for my car, because my scholarship almost covered my entire college tuition. So basically, I am allow to spend the amount in the RA department. I would definitely love to get one at 16k, but I'll probably need to outconvince the sales guy before he does that to me

Unfortunately, I am from nyc. Insurance here is nuts. Good thing my parents have gotten their license for 15-20 years with a clean record, so my insurance won't hit the moon. I know most of you are thinking "oh why would someone from NYC need a car". That is a valid statement, but public transportation can't take me to everywhere. Occasionally I need to make trips across NJ and to Long Island. Public transportation is just not time efficient sometimes. Lets just say everything will just be more conveinent.

I'm telling you man, get a 2002/2003 OZ. You should be able to get into it cheap (I've seen very decent examples for 8k) it looks sporty, insurance won't kill you and best of all, it's quite moddable.

I need lessons from these guys who say they got their Ralliart for 16k. I got a nice discount and still paid signifigantly more than that.

No matter what, just be sure you get the 5 speed.

Bah, you're just jealous. I paid for school, all my cars, and everything myself....I'm jealous of 'em too.

How? Selling dope?

I guess if your car and car-related bills are all you have to pay for, you could do it.

One of my neighbors is 27, still lives at home with his Mom, and is always complaining to me about not having money. His cars are beaters, but they're paid for, and he's got a job. How can he be broke? Strippers and beer?

I bought my first car off my dad a 1994 V6 Plymouth Acclaim, lasted me from 1999-2005 now I managed to sell that for $1000 put $5000 on my RA which i picked up for $13,000 with 16k mikes and S&S I got a steal. but i'm 22 and put in my time working and got a nice job now outta college.

I def baby this car, and love every inch of it. I'd say since you won't drive it so much, go with the 03 OZ you can pick one up for $8000 easy with sub 40k miles on it

def get 5 speed whatever you do
