straight pipe problems???

i just had cat-back pipes built for my RA and my girls celica, it sounds really good by the way. but anyways, her dad told me that he heard somewhere that since both our cars have resonators that just running a straight pipe would burn up the valves! i didn't know but i would like to before i get into alot of trouble...

side note...on the way home just about 15 minutes ago i got pulled over for my exhaust being too loud! haha, but then the cop realized who i was and just let me go (benefits of living in a small town and having a side job working at a pizza place and giving the cops free pizza )

So you have no resonator or muffler? It's not a V8... you can't abuse the head like that... you need a little back pressure... that's why if you buy a catback it still has a resonator and muffler... Do you have an intake? If you do I hope you have a piggy cause you are probably runnin very lean...

Did you already pull the code, and did you reset your ECU when you installed the intake?

yea i pulled the code and it says engine running lean, but i didn't reset the ecu...can you do that just by taking off the power from the battery?

Disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes, then reconnect and let the car idle for about another 10 to start to relearn, then drive normally.

I would double check that the MAS is tightened down securely too. I dont know if it would cause that code, but I have heard some guys curing a CEL after an intake install that way.

Also check the O2 sensor because when they start to go bad they throw a week signal back to the ecu and it might have gotten fouled... I would suggest the piggy... and if you are really concerned get a wideband O2 a/f meter... and I just saw the straight pipe thing and that usually means no muffler... sorry...

yea the first thing i checked was the MAS, its on there as tight as it can get. i'll see if just reseting the ECU cleans it up and if it doesn't i'll just get the piggy back. i was gunna get one anyways but had other things on my list first...guess that might just be bumped up a couple notches...how do you check the 02 sensor?
