Since the differences between sythetic and conventional oil is just a matter of size of the atoms/individual particles of oil, some people who own older cars, like me (ford taurus sho) have to use conventional because the car's engine has been worn out and not all the seals are at 100% and when parts are used they tend to wear down so all the metal is either rusted together or miniscully loose. Thus the smaller particles of oil in synthetic oil can seep through more easily, but on a new car like the lancer it is beneficial to use synthetic oil. So technically speaking your friend isn't wrong in a general sense if you're talking about older cars, but for a car like your ralliart synthetic is the way to go, i personally switched to synthetic immediately after i got my RA. When i drive the Taurus on synthetic it smokes a lot cause it burns up the leaking oil, whereas when i use conventional i have little to no smoke what so ever...

If anyone finds anything wrong, feel free to correct me. This is from personal experience having gone through a bunch of cars from various eras (86 MR2).

I switched to synthetic in my old '93 Talon at around 80k miles. No leaks, no smoke. At 80k, there were brown deposits from the oil visible under the valve cover. At 230k, when an early timing belt failure took out the head, it looked brand new under the valve cover. My local machine shop was amazed at how clean the head was.

That sold me on synthetic for good.

FWIW, I also used synthetic for the first oil change in my RA, and every change since then. No problems yet @46k miles.

One thing that I would like too add. I could be wrong so correct me if I am, but my brother told me that once you go to synthetic you can't go back to conventional oil. Is this correct or am I totally off. Not that I would even think of putting conventional back in my RA anyway, but though I would bring it up.

Stealership will refuse to put the synthetic because either they cant make that much of $$ by putting synthetic.

Dont listen to those stealerships.......synthetic is the way to go.

Specially.....try out the ROYALPURPLE synthetic.

Check this out...

dealerships are gay. Whenever i go there, they always put conventional oil. Im trying them to put synthetic oil. BUt usually after the dealer changes the oil, i put a 1000 miles on and i change it to synthetic.

Anyone kno if dealers can put synthetic oil into their ralliart if you asked the dealer. My dealer is Mitsu in Staten Island. PM if you kno anything.
