Completely Clueless. Please help!
I have never never had interest in cars at all! Know NOTHING about them at all. Always been in to music, skateboarding and mountain biking. I was looking for a car with half decent gas mileage because I drive 40 miles each way to work each day. Got a great deal on a 2004 Ralliart... I have been bitten. This car is so fun to drive. This is getting long so I will get to the point. I have been told that I can make this car faster with not too much money. I'm not looking for turbo type money but lets say I have $1,000 to make some mods...
Please, do not forget I am clueless... I need suggestions that a totally clueless person can understand.
What are my best options to get better performance!
I am in Phoenix AZ, is there somewhere I can go to have someone do this stuff for me.
Sorry so long. PLEASE help. i know there are previous threads on this stuff but they don't make much sense to me.
PLEASE HELP

Get piggyback= extra car computer that tells your cars computer to go faster.
Intake= the tube that sucks air into your motor
Catback exaust= Look it up on the search. Road race motor sports (rrm) makes it
give it to any mechanic he will know what to do with it.
You will be close to 1K after labor an those parts Good luck

At the top of this forum there's a thread you should read, clearly labeled as a newbie thread. There's a LOT of info in there to get you pointed in the right direction. $1,000 can get you covered on the basics - intake, piggyback ECU (alters the amount of fuel going into the engine to make more power), and a suspension mod or two.
As far as bang-for-the-buck mods go, i would say stay away from the catback system. There havn't been any impressive gains compared to stock as of yet, and it is close to $500 on average (correct me if i'm wrong)
I would first go with a cold air intake system from Road Race Motorsports (about $229??). The install is easy. If you can follow simple directions, and have the tools to work on bikes or skateboards, you shouldn't have a problem.
Next i would say get the Road Race Motorsports Underdrive Pully kit ($119). They include great directions and could also be easily installed.
Next lets improve that clutch feel, and the Road Race motorsports Stainless steel clutch line. ($69) A section of stainless steel tubing, with a nut on each end. Again, not too much involved. (just be careful about losing fluid, research bleeding lines)
So thats almost half of what you are looking to spend. I would say start with that, DO the work yourself, and get to know your car. If you take your time, follow the directions, there really isn't too much you could screw up. Plus, and trust me on this, if you do the work to your car, the performence gains feel much cooler. you wouldn't pay someone to have sex with your girlfriend, right?
So do that, save the rediculous cost of shop installs, learn about the machine you drive, and love it even more.
Again, these are just suggestions.
Good choice on the ralliart, and welcome to the community

Tehak,
Congrats on your car, I normally don't answer on the Ralliart forums but since you are new I would help you out.
$1000 can do some difference but from my point of view $1000 will put you half way on the path of being decently fast, I mean the Ralliart is a quick car(comparable to my GTI VR6) .
I would say put some header, exhaust, CAI and maybe some tuning. There is not much that you can do to a N/A car that will get significant power.

Trending Topics
If you want to wait, an exhaust header/DP combo is in the works right now. There are two companies making this, RPW and RRM. do a search and you should be able to find more info on this if you like.
I would go a little simpler though, start with an intake to help the car breath better, there are lots of options for this. (AEM, Injen, RRM to name three companies) do a search to find out more.
Definitely the RRM underdrive pulley. Best bang for the buck, so they say. I love it. Do a search for more info.
And the piggyback will definitely have some very good gains. RRM is now including the mapping software, so as you mod your car you can tune it yourself (or see if someone with similar mods will let you have a copy of there map) do a search to find more info
Handling is very important, so you may want to consider some upgrades there. The rear sway bar will help a ton, as will the tie bar. Both of these are easy modifications that require little to no real car knowledge, just how to turn a wrench basically. See my sig? (the thing under the line at the bottom of my post) There is a DIY in the RA how to forum that I did on the tie bar. search for more info.
If you like how the car sounds and enjoy it, you would probably like it more with at least an exhaust. There is an axleback out right now and RRM has just developed a cat-back system to mate to the header/downpipe combo they are making. Your other option here would be a custom exhaust from a muffler shop. check your phone book and ask around for a reputable shop. do a search for more info.
Welcome to EvoM and good luck with your car. I hope to see you around often learning and adding to the community. Do a search for more info. (remember that)

Cold Air Intake, Downpipe, Pulley and Catback Exhaust = High 14's
Cold Air Intake, Race Header, Catback Exhaust, Pulley, Intake Manifold = Mid 14's
Cold Air Intake, Race Header, Catback Exhaust, Pulley, Intake Manifold, Piggyback ECU, Tires = Low 14's
The greatest mod you can do for the ralliart is tires. Magazines, Internet Sites and EvoM members can not stress enough how much brand new tires do wonders on the car. when the car was first released mitsu did put on bridgestone potenzas and the ralliart was praised in reviews from alot of media sources, but when mitsu switch to Eagle RS-A (to save $32) that was the downfall of the ralliart stock performance.

I disagree with everyone on this thread. If you're as clueless as you claim to be, the first thing you need is a trusted mechanic who has the knowledge to work on your car, because you're going to have a tough time installing any mods outside of an intake on your car. Talk to him. Show him this site and RRM. Have him explain to you what parts you how these parts help your car. Once you have a basic understanding, then look at the other posts in this thread again to get an idea of what you can get for the money you're looking at.

At first, you told him to not to listen to me on my suggested mods:
(CAI,tuning,header and exhaust).
Then later on you mention that he better get an axle back and a CAI and some tuning from someone that has a map (that is 3 things I already mentioned), so I already matched 3 of the 4 items you suggested.
Then you said pulley and I said header.
What is you issue dude?
Then you ask him to upgrade his tires and suspension?Hellooooo!! his budget was $1000.Be clear bro, he can't have all that for $1000. By the way, I came out with 4 cat-backs while you only provide 2..

Tehak,
Please join AZevos. We use to have a very good website that was close , it was www.azlancers.net.
Sorry for the confusion with the other Evo member, we had two absolutely two different points of view.
Anyway, I wish to invite you tomorrow to Firebird raceway. I will be there at around 2100 hours, pm me ,and I can give you instructions how to get there.
I can help you to get the stuff done in your car.
As per shops in AZ, off course I know a few of them(unlike you other fellow Evo member dangerousdan)

With 1000 to spend on mods, I'd buy the AEM cold air intake, RRM or a custom exhaust, and RRM's piggyback ECU.
http://www.aempower.com/product_intake_app.asp
Mitsubishi Lancer 04-05 Ralliart MT ONLY 21-436 Pending New Release $369.38
http://roadracemotorsports.com/ralliart.htm
ROAD/RACE PIGGY BACK ECU 5 speed $459.00
RRM/ MAGNA FLOW Stainless Catback Exhaust
This is brand new. Beautifully crafted catback system is completely stainless including piping. 2.25 inch diameter piping is perfect for N/A or Turbo setup. Include polished stainless muffler and 3.5 inch dual wall tip. It will not burn your bumper! For 04-06 Ralliarts only.
$459.00
If you have basic mechanical knowledge, you can do the intake and maybe the exhaust yourself. ECUs should be installed by professionals or people with greater mechanical knowledge than just being able to turn a wrench.
My final suggestion or recommendation is this: Do each part separately so you can enjoy the gains of each individual part. Put on the intake so it's really cool whistle makes you smile while it pushes your *** into the seat. Get the exhaust installed next, so that deep rumble pisses off the neighbors and makes the RA sound even more amazing than it already does. And top it off with the piggyback ECU for the ultimate in a "Stage 0" ralliart. Wait at least a week between parts. It may be hard at first, but you'll truly appreciate it in the end.

^^ Also, seriously consider getting the Short Throw Shifter and shifter bushings from RRM's website as well. It's really cheap and will greatly improve the feel of the car, especially during 'spirited' driving.
