Back to the topic sort of. What RPM is too low to be cruising at? Is there like a certain RPM you shouldn't cruise below, or does it matter? I'm new to stick and just wondering thanks.

you will feel when the car starts to struggle, other than that go as low as you want. As far as "cruising" is concerned, if you over 20 mph you should be able to move along in 4th or 5th gear fairly easily. If you are cruising the strip or something you can let the car pull itself in 1st gear. no harm.

As for low end cruising, I've slowly been teaching myself to allow to car to rev lower and lower recently. I find that with stock gearing, 5th gear can stretch itself down to 35mph or so, but I'm not sure what mileage is like at that speed. Initially, I would keep the car close to 2k or above, but lately I've learned that the 4G69 has enough torque to go lower. In general, I don't go below 1500 RPM or so in anything above 2nd gear.

What about the rest of you?

I also let 5th gear go pretty low sometimes, 35-40mph.

So, your telling me that the car can sit, and you don't need to shift? or is it just that ya'll rely on your warranty to replace broken tranny parts? I know i killed a trans in my mustang by staying in lower gears, and I could feel it dieing when I had the boxster, but this car I dunno how to feel in the trans, because I've never owned a F/F car. So, basically, you can just sit in a single gear just going along? I have started out the car *After vigarous testing* that I can start in 3rd, and up until i got used to the shifter did it quite frequently. go

errr... wth are you asking? I was saying, and his question asked about, the fact that in first gear you don't have to apply any gas at all. The engine will "pull" the car along. Very slowly albeit, but it doesn't require any throttle. It was a manual noob question.

Ahnospell, I think it's worse for your car starting from a stop in third gear then it is using first gear, you have low gears for a reason, dont be afraid to use them.

But, as it has been stated many times, once you hit the mivec you better be driving for fun, cause you sure aren't saving gas.

I know this response is late as hell but I'm gonna go ahead and respond. When I said 70 I was defining optimum as the fastest you can go without drastically decreasing you mpg. You are right though. I believe the best speed to go is between 60-65mph to get the best mpg out of you car.

But anyways, you guys can carry on with whatever you were talking about.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you can also increase you gas consumption by being in too high a gear for the speed. For instance, you could probably pull off from a stop in 3rd gear but the engine is going to be seriously bogged down and is going to yearn for all kinds of fuel. But that's an extreme, just like doing 35 in 1st gear would be the opposite extreme.

That's what I've wanted to clarify for a while. While cruising on the freeway on the way to auto-x in my friend's 02 C5 Corvette 6sp and I noticed that at 75 or 80 we were revving below1800 or so if I remember right.... and of course that thing's got plenty of low-end torque and grunt to pull the weight, but it makes me wonder at what point does the RA start to become inefficient at the low end of the spectrum, if at all. Anybody wanna back us up with some factual info?

daily driving the rpm I stay at is under 2000rpm for the most gas mileage available. It has enough juice to get you going under 2000rpm in every gear...
