Hey guys,

I was wondering how many of you are running in Auto X, and what you figure would be a good place to start in mods to prep a car for it. Tires and seat time are obvious ones, but what else in terms of suspension stuff would help get my time down?

tie bar, sway bar, coilovers(lot's of money,) possibly engine mounts. What don't you like about the car?? That's how I usually choose my upgrades. Car has understeer stock so I got the tie bar. Stock downpipe is crimped, so I bought the downpipe and put in a highflow cat. So, what don't you like about the car?

 

I just started Auxo-X in my RA this month. I'm having fun.

Go tires first, the stock ones BLOW.

I plan to do the rear sway, perches, and tie bar in the spring to tune the understeer out of this thing and tighten up the response. So far lack of power isn't the issue for me, but when I put some good tires on maybe then I'll want more grunt.

The biggest and most obvious thing is that it understeers like a dumptruck in stock configuration. Rear sway is the first thing I'm doing after tires to try and tune that out.

Like the guys have said before -- suspension first (sway bar and perches from RRM, tiebar, rear strut brace, coilovers or springs, alignment, tires, brake pads), then do power mods (intake, pulley, piggyback, etc. etc.). Seat time is your best friend.....ask lots of questions to the veterans that have been doing it awhile, you will learn a ton.
Check the rules to find out what mods you can do in a certain class.
Are you going to do SCCA autocross or some other club?

 

What tires did yours come with?

We get Yokohama Advan 0460's, haven't heard of any complaints about them

 

Wow... my 05 RA here in Canada came with Goodyear Eagle RS-A all seasons. Barf. Big soft wide shoulder that rolls over to halfway down the sidewall even with 50 lbs in it. I bet my winter tires would auto-X better... they are probably a much softer compound.

We'll see where the OP is going Auto-X, I'm doing a local club here in Ottawa. http://www.mco.org So far it's been great, we are getting 6-7 runs in at an event, and our lot and courses tend to come out 50-70 seconds, so great club runs. I hear the SCCA events you get 3 runs, so I'm happy with the club runs. We have much slacker rules, and anybody and everybody does ride alongs, so you can learn a ton. Great group of folks, and I've even gotten my wife into it.

North America gets Goodyear RSA's.

In our SCCA region it depends on how many entrants. We get anywhere from 4-6 runs typically plus fun runs sometimes. At Nationals you only get 3 runs.

 

We average 6 or so runs per event here (4 timed and usually 2 or 3 timed runs). Courses are designed to run from 70 to 90 seconds usually, though the speeds can vary from a max of 70 ish to 100+ depending on course design. My biggest beef with the car is that on the tight courses I have a hard time getting traction out of the corners, and the car ploughs like a train.

So I guess I should stiffen up the back a bit. Anybody using coilovers in autoX and if so how much difference did it make? I don't want to move out of stock class unless I can still be somewhat competitive in mod.

Our events aren't SCCA, but we do follow a lot of their rules I believe, at least with respect to classing and points.

As for tires, I have some falken ZE 512's on 17's that I'll run on next season if I move up. This season I've been running on my stocker RE-92's. And holy hell do they suck. Anyone ran on the 512's in competiton?

My 2004 Sportback RA came with Potenzas RE92's....I destroyed those tires in my first 3 Autox events held at a local Kart track (Kart tracks eat tires in no time!). Now I got a set of Rota 16" with BF G-force Sport...they are a lot better that the stockers (and cheaper also).

1st Event: Stock: 1.12.xx
2nd Event: K&N Drop + RRM Swaybar/Perches & Tie Bar: 1:08:xx
3rd Event: CF Hood & UP: 1:05:xx
4th Event: Rota Sub_Zero/G_Force Sport : 1:02:89

Now I am 2-3 seconds behind the slowest Evos and Subbies at that track. (Fastest are doing around 54 seconds!). Some simple mods and a lot of track time will make you a better driver and also enjoy your RA to the fullest!

 

Don't some come with the potenzas because mine have potenzas, that or the 1st owner put them on there but i thought they either have the RSAs or the potenzas?

I have an '04 that came with RSA's. I believe some of the early production 2004's came with the Potenza's....then they switched to the RSA's to save $


Aren't the 512's all season tires? IMO - Would be better to get som Falken Azeni's RT615's or Hankook's Rs2's. Those are the most popular autocross "street tire". They would probably only last a year, but give hella grip.
