Scangauge II Automotive Computer

http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/8426/

This looks really cool, especially if you drive long distances etc. It says:

"The ScanGauge II is simple to use and install and mounts in, on or below the dash. It plugs into the diagnostic OBD-II connector found under the dash on 1996 and newer cars and light trucks. The functions are accessed viaa simple on-screen menu interface. There is an automatic delayed power-down after engine shutoff and automatic power-up when engine is started. User and vehicle settings are automatically saved."

Just thought I'd check with those in the know here about the "OBD II" diagnostic connector - that something our cars have?

If it will work that'd be really cool, especially if they work in metric too

Yes you can select what units you want for everthing. It then saves them. It also saves what colour backlight you want too.

The best part of the Scangauge is the 4-gauge screen which can tell you any combination of sensor readings.

I set mine to:

.....Speed..................................MPG... ..
Intake Air Temp .................Water Temp

But it can also do RPM, Open/Closed Loop, Manifold Pressure, and others.

Love the work you are doing on your car too!
Sounds like even The Stig would love it

By law in the US, all cars are required to have this within X inches from the drivers seat. I dont remember the distance, something like 3 ft? And I dont remember what year this law went into effect. Anyone on this site will certainly have one!

I'm not in the USA though, but I am sure in Australia its a similar deal. And that it will be no different on my car - as soon as the sun is up I'll have a look for the connector.

I'm a bit of a gadget freak and really loved how my brothers Subaru Liberty had all that data available in the car standard - on a screen near the stereo. So this would be cool!

I just got one today for a Father's Day / Birthday present. Hooked it up....it is really cool. I like it so far. Can't wait to try out the fuel computer stuff.

Have my guages set to:

Water Temp .......Intake Temp
Voltage ..............Manifold pressure

Not sure if I will keep voltage up constantly, but you can easily change anything on there.
Manifold pressure is very interesting. Where I am, idle is around 2 to 3 psi...and WOT is just over 14.

Sort of a side note, but wouldn't this be a simple way to find the MIVEC switchover point as well (either 3.5k or 4.5k based on the recent service bulletin)? MPG would drop a bit after a certain RPM once MIVEC kicked in, so you could just set your cruise just above/below the engagement point and see what kind of numbers you get. Just one of many uses I guess. Looks like fun!

Digital Gauges - Shows 4 gauges at a time from the possible following:

Fuel Economy (MPG - gasoline engines only)
Fuel Rate (GPH - gasoline engines only)
Battery Voltage
Coolant Temperature
Intake Air Temperature
Engine Speed (RPM)
Vehicle speed (MPH)
Manifold Pressure (not available on some vehicles)
Engine Load
Throttle Position
Ignition Timing
Open/Closed Loop

says shows them, but doesnt have ltr/km, or kph but good if it does,
maybe u can get a aus group buy going

^^ It does have the conversion built in for Celsius, Liters and KM/H. So all you metric peeps can get it too.

The only piece of info our ECU does not give is Fuel Rate.
