FLywheel CRACKED! (with pics)

See my prev thread here :
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=288714
Car failed to start and was first thought to be timing belt.

Further inspection by Mitsubishi has advised that the clutch is mashed, along with a CRACKED FLYWHEEL! Ive not been riding the clutch, ive not been doing huge burnouts like one would think, and the majority of the 32,000kms on my 12 month old car has all been highway driving to and from work! Surely a flywheel shouldn't end up like this when you're driving 'enthusiastically'. I know a lot of you US guys use your Ralliarts for auto-x'ing and haven had issues like I'm currently experiencing.

Thoughts people --- SHOULD this EVER happen to a Flywheel in a stock 4g69 Lancer??? I was pleasantly surprised to find the stock clutch disc was an Exedy item! Im almost certain that the flywheel cracked, and then munched the clutch apart (regardless of me abusing it somewhat). Evidence of this is the markings on the bell housing from the flywheel, as well as markings on the pressure plate, and also shredded disc everywhere.

Dealer has been extremely helpful so far, and is hoping Mitsu will cover it under warranty --- if not, I'll be fighting it . Not only shouldn't this of happened --- but it could of been a major incident should the flywheel of come apart totally and shot through the firewall.

Damn, that flywheel cracked quite badly. I wonder how that happened.

Good luck with getting it repaired, you'll be on the road in no time.

No, there is no reason for a flywheel to crack. Other than a manufacturing defect, the only way I could perceive that happening is if the flywheel got overheated (due to slipping the clutch) then cooled off too quickly.

my clutch and flywheel were shot after i had my used 04 for about 2 months...it had 16,500 miles on it and mitsu dealership said it was my fault. lol i drove my dads 6 speed G35 for 6 months before getting the RA and when they said they wouldnt cover it under the drivetrain part of the waranty my dad tried to fight them but they were saying it was considered a wear and tear part...isnt that basically the only parts to the drivetrain? soo shouldnt it have been covered? well a little less than $1,200 later i got a new clutch, flywheel, and bearings....kinda sucked, hope it goes better for you

Mitsubishi offers a generous new-car warranty on all models, including seven years and 100,000 miles of coverage on the powertrain.

A Powertrain warranty covers engine components such as the engine block, cylinder heads, intake/exhaust manifolds, injection systems, flywheels, crankshaft, pistons – basically anything related to the vehicle’s power plant.
The Drivetrain warranty refers to anything that drives the wheels, such as the transmission, axles, wheel hub assemblies, transfer case, auxiliary gearbox, differentials, driveshafts, clutch, pressure plate, etc.

Should be in your CAR WARRANTY book ... that comes with all new cars. Your warranty may be different from what Retro listed above.

In Australia, my car came with the Mitsu 5/10 Warranty which includes:.
5 year or 130,000km* Factory Warranty.
10 year or 160,000km* Powertrain Warranty.

Clutches are a wear item and only covered for the first 10-12k miles from defects. I'm not sure about the flywheel, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was the same.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that was just a general deff of the warranty, not in fact from Mitsu. One of these days I'll break out the manual and see what the fine print says...

I voided mine so long ago, I never had any interest in reading it!

That was definitely a manufacturer defect. As otter said, it MAY have been emphasized by heating / cooling. Perhaps it was cold when it happened and you just got done driving it for a while? Either way, I'd get RRM's flywheel after that little episode. The RRM is lighter and strong from what I hear. When I replace my clutch, I'll be replacing the flywheel too.

SO GOOD .. was about to winge here that ive not heard from Mitsu since last Friday ........ and they called me as i was typing !!!!

Just found out my wagon is ready to be picked up!!! WOOHOO . Apparently the workshop boys took to for a 50kms drive and said it's runnin like new, engine is in perfect condition, nothing else was damaged. Dealer will put in a warranty claim for the flywheel / clutch / all bits that were replaced, and let me know if anything goes wrong but hes extremely confident that it will all be covered.

*jumps for joy*

Will be interesting to see if it feels any better/different to what it drove like before it all went pear shaped.
