does the shifter have the same stock bend at the top that the stock shifter does or is it just straight no bend in the short shifter...if no bend then this is why its a little off from third because your missing that bend and that is what centers the shifter so it will look a little off

Unlikely..

Since its shifting fine its not going to be the slave or master clutch cylinders. I say open up the hood, look at your shifter bushings and give them a good coat down of some silicone grease or something just to loosen them up, then fiddle with the shifter and go through the gears to spread the lube out and see how that works. I still say take out the center console and look at the shifterbase setup, honestly I think your problem is there. That spring i previously mentioned is the spring that bring the shifter back to your so called "home" position so that its not stuck midgear or anything.

i really have a feeling it has something to do with a spring or something wearing out inside the boot...

what should this sort of stuff cost me?

that little bow spring shouldn't cost much.. Unless they make you buy the whole assembly, in which case I'd look into finding a wrecked lancer/evo/ralliart.. its all the same part as long as its 5spd

Did you even check your cable bushings, or are you just going to start throwing money at it until it goes away?

hahaah!
no, im just just trying to get some oppinions on waht it might be,
but since I didnt put this kit in, (bought the car after it was done)
im not sure what i would even be looking at.
I mean sure if i see a bushing slpit in half or corroded like what, id know that much...
but after the valve lash incident, i kinda tread softly on these situations...

so since i just realized my textual representation did not work the way i wanted it to...
i drew one up so there is no confusion.
the x is where my shifter wants to stay. (i realized that if i dont nudge it over at all today tho, that i will almsot stay in line with gear 1)

I have a feeling its just a bushing and wil lbe an easy fix,
i know the guy who had the car before me had busted a bushing puting it in,
so im sure he just did a shoddy job and it may have come loose or busted.
Im gonna see if road race has heard anything about this before and i will hopefully be able to take a look at it this weekend.

doesn't sound like a bushing unless you are having resistance when moving the shifter. If it is moving freely you need to pull the console out like bruce has been trying to tell you. I think he's right on target with the "bow spring" he was referring to.

thank you Dan

You're asking for our advice Joho, this is what we're throwing at you. Until you get you nerve up to start poking around further we really can't help you much more. We're here to help troubleshoot but in order for that to happen you have to help out too...
I say its the bow spring, I know mines is a little soft now and it doesn't bounce back as fast as it used to. All springs go over time, like our suspension, so it could very well be the bow spring. It doesn't sound like a bushing problem to me cause if you can shift fine it means the bushings are moving that or you're completely bending something under your hood to get into gear.

O and trust me, taking your centerconsole out is MUCH easier than valve lash.

bow spring...
ok.
I have to look up some blown up pictures of the assembly before i
start poking around.
Ill see if my mechanically inclined friend has time to swing by today and we will take a look together...
maybe he can even get some pictures of the assembly.

What could cause this to happen?
just wear and tear?

(what this part go for and where can I get it?)
