yeah, i'll try and figure out which is which and verify it for you, but I think that's it. whatever cable has the pins on it plugs into the socket on the piggyback (has holes in it, assuming this is why it's female

The end of the cable that plugs into the piggy is male. Has to have pins, not holes.
Dan, it's the pins that determine gender, not the plug.
I just left the DB-9 cable plugged in to my piggy when I installed it up inside my dashboard. The cable comes down out of the dash and follows the center console toward the rear, and comes out next to the passenger seat. When I'm not using the cable, it stays coiled up under the seat.
