Fuel door problem

The other day I was filling up and I pulled the handle to pop the fuel door open and it only popped open slightly, and i had to pull it open the rest of the way. I thought maybe it had just been dirty and went on with my day.

I go to fuel up today and the fuel door doesn't open at all, and I had to use my key to pop it open.

I found this thing lying inside the fuel door:

Where on earth does it go? Im going to assume there are supposed to be two of these but, and the other might have fallen out the first time i was having issues and I didn't notice.

Where does it go?

This combined with the keyfob problem is driving me crazy, I've got a case of the gremlins.

clip that back onto a little metal part sticking out from the door (it has a little hole in it) the black part should face towards the fuel cap. i had to buy one of these from a mitsu dealer cuz it didn't have one. if the lock that holds it into the little hole broke, it'll run you about 2 bucks at the dealer if you want, i can take a picture for you and send it

sorry but i just reread my answer and it's kinda hard to understand lol.

the gray plastic part is clipped onto the little metal square with a hole in it that is sticking out from the fuel door. the plastic part should have a small circular area that will fit into the metal hole and lock it into place. hope this helps :-)

Would anyone happen to know the part number for this piece?

It just broke today and I had to rig up a quick fix until I can get a replacement.

Run to the dealer have them look it up. Then run to back here after telling the dealer that there's no way in hell you're paying that much for that piece and order it from russelM... haha

wish i could help, but just tell the dealer you need the spring for the fuel door, that it's the same one the outlanders use. it cost me $1.72 if i'm not mistaken
