For those who have replaced the alternator on the RA, what's the best way to do it? There's no real DIY on the forum for this process. I want to replace it before the winter season starts in Boston.

 

I have another question. What is the best alternator to buy??? Meaning how many amps. I'm also interested in the diy on the alternator replacement.

 

I had to replace the alternator on mine earlier this year. I just got a used one from a salvage yard for $45, had only about 30k on it. As for the process, it was pretty easy.

Disconnect the battery, take tension off accessory drive belt, disconnect wires, remove bolts. Then figure out what else you need to remove to pull out the alternator. I think I got away with only pulling out the radiator fan. Remove old alt, put new one in the same way that one came out, bolt back up, connect wires, connect battery.

I do remember that one of the bolts was in a very tight spot to get to, I couldn't get a ratchet and socket in there, so I had to use a wrench and turn the bolt 1/12 of a turn at a time. It took forever and a day, but got it out and back in and tight.

 

Pretty much what big guy above said, but to add my 2 cents, you can get a excessive amperage 180 amp alt. or do like I am which is going to a large case alt with a custom bracket from mechman alt. its 220 amps.

 

hey edbighead.... I was interested in what you said about the large case alt.... I went on there web site but couldn't see a kit for a 04 ralliart... Let me know how you make out...
