My Current SRI
It looks like I should change the filter, but i'm not sure how to determine what kind/size of filter I need. Also, I was wondering if the piping was from the original air box, and if there would be any gains by changing it out. Also wondering if I should be getting a heat shield for it or if it's really no big deal.

You don't change these filters
Unless of course you get a giant hole in it or something. It looks like a K&N oiled filter. Hate them. But go to advanced auto parts or whatever car part store is around and buy a filter recharge kit. It cleans the filter and you re-oil it
But don't over oil it, will probably gunk up your MAF.
About the heatshield, I'm assuming they work but not really sure how well, I want to make one for mine but haven't gotten around to it.

I thought they should be changed after getting quite dirty...? That's just what I seen from watching some youtube videos and stuff.
I hadn't thought about making my own....I'll take a look online for instructions.

Well I had one on my R/T neon for 6 years. I always just cleaned it and oiled it. Just clean it really really good. Take a day where you aren't going to drive or just let it dry overnight. Unless someone else on here says to replace it, then go for it. But I say just try cleaning it, you'll see the difference is night/day.
Yup I just get nice warm soapy water I prefer a nice dish soap obviously for cutting threw grease and grim. Then nice hang dry and I personally use my own little mix on my filter. But there are kits you can buy that have the 'Proper' filter oil.
Oiled filters should outlast the car.
Get the K&N recharge kit, it has cleaner and oil in it. Pre-soaking in dish soap is good to remove most of the gunk, then hit it with the K&N cleaner to get the rest. Let it dry thoroughly. Oil very lightly as the directions will tell you (the color will change, but it shouldn't be wet with the oil if you touch it. Paper towel will pull out excess if you use too much), then reinstall.

this isnt a K&N filter. looks more like the one that comes with the RRM SRI.
I'd get the AEM dry airflow filter from a parts store. you wash it every so often in warm water with AEM's filter cleaning solution and let it dry. no oiling required.

Hmm, I see a lot of these Hot Air Intakes and wonder if the hot air being sucked in negates the effects a shorter route intake would gain from or not. If anything you should look to find an oiled foam filter like the perrin ones but smaller, because they have a 4.5 inlet which is kinda large for you and would need a step down(preferably a velocity stack
)
The OILED foam ones filter very well, breathe great, and are simple to clean.
Also if you car has a factory scoop that was part of the stock intake system, it couldn't hurt to leave it on so it can direct fresh air to your filter. That is if it points toward your new filter.

On a side note, and let's not get off topic about short ram intakes vs cold air intakes vs etcetera. It's all been said, done, and argued over before.
And tell me why you don't like oiled filters?
Has anything actually factual been PROVEN?

Don't ask me, use the search button. I merely stated that it had been all said and argued over before. There's a sticky for it at the top of this very forum.
Personal preference, easier to clean, less risk of gunking up the MAF due to over oiling. Thank you for reminding me to explain my choice for the OP.
Therefore...?

You pretty much have to drench the filter in oil for it to suck the oil onto your maf. Heck without a doubt my engine pulls in over 2x the air than yours and I've never gotten a drop on my maf. If you somehow get oil on your maf from an oiled foam filter, then you are doing something extremely wrong.Oh man, spraying it with a cleaner and letting sit for a few min, wrinse, dry, oil is such a complicated procedure.
Proper spec oiled foam filter > all. Ones like the hks mushroom thing are fail.
