Oil Change

Just looking for opinions...

I am getting my oil change and am thinking of starting to use a full synthetic. My engine's just over 170,000km (106,000 miles). The shop I go to uses this brand for their full synthetic...

the msds

It's going to cost about 50 bucks more than a regular oil change but I want my car to run its best and take the best care of it I can. Do you think it's worth it to start using synthetic oil?

And please don't tell me to do it myself...I will be in the summer...

Doing it yourself and having a shop do it for you make a big difference. An extra $50? Really? I bought my car used at 68,000mi (106k now) and have only used full synthetic, but I always do it myself. Since your taking it to a shop, and they're charging you that much extra, IMO I'd say just hold off on the full synthetic until you're able to work on it yourself. Just change it sooner than later.

Thumbs up

Yeah 50$ extra is crazy at my shop we charge 28$ extra to run full synth. 50 seems way crazy. I'd see I'f you could bring in your own oil see how much that will total. or do it yourself also SYTH. is the best. Hope this helps.

Yeah I've decided to run full synthetic from now on anyway. I'll be doing it myself when the weather's nicer, but I'm overdue for it now. Found a place that will do the same thing for 25 bucks cheaper.

Autozone usually has specials. I changed mine a few weeks ago. $30 for 5 quarts of Mobil 1 full synthetic with a K&N filter included (HP-1008).

Usually I get quoted $80 for a full synthetic oil change, haven't found it cheaper here in Southern California.
Edit: and when I get quoted $80 for a full synthetic oil change they use the cheap oil/filter :\

I've used K&N, Bosch, and Mobil1 Oil filters. I'm thinking of next trying out the Napa Gold Filter. Anyone with any experience with it?

you must not drive much do you... even with amsoil i wouldn't taken that chance of only one oil change a year. specially not after my engine failure of lack of oil pressure

spun rod bearing = engine rebuild

there were 2 possible causes, dirty/clogged oil filter or dirty oil screwing with my oil pump. either way one of them caused the oil pressure to drop and which destroyed the lower half of my engine.
