So to save gas, what's a good shift point? 2000 rpm's or under? And also how many gallons of gas can an RA hold in it's tank?

I shift at about 2500 RPMs, and I've been getting pretty decent mileage this spring/summer. Sometimes I do the "1-3-5" shifting and shift just under 3000 RPMs which seems about the same.

And our tank holds 13.2 gallons.

If u only fill up half way instead full tank there's a chance of u getting an xtra 1 mpg cause a full tank of gas is almost 100 pounds so helf would be 50 pounds saving u weight and the less weight u have the less your engine works so the better mpg you'll receive, just a theory but it should work out for the guy trying to squeez out as much mpg he or she can.

I shift around 2500. I believe the tank holds a little above 13.

What?
I think the part where he say's don't fill up all the way, Half tank=50 pounds=less weight=car works less because of less weight.

13 gallons = 60.77lbs so half is 30 lbs

It really wouldn't make a ****ing difference. You would be filling up twice as much, considering every time you half way fill up. The most effective way to get better MPG is to not drive like a ****ing idiot.

if mpgs are important to you, drive a geo metro. that said, i too was a bit put off by the mpgs of mine, and would love to drop my rpms in 5th at 80mph from 4000 down to bout 3000. I suppose if one was bored you could do the math to estimate how much less fuel u could burn, hmm lets see, help me out here if u can. 1000rpm times 60minutes in an hour equals 60000. figuring on two cylinders firing each revolution, and each cylinder is about .6 liters,so 1.2 liters in total each rev, and ideal air fuel mixture is 14 to 1, so figure that by dividing 1.2 liters by 14 you get .08liter which should be the gas portion of the mixture. So .08 liters of gas times the rpm of 60,000 equals 4800 liters per hour, or 1,269 gallons per hour........And im certain my math is off. Correct me if im wrong. Which i am.....hmmmm, I dunno, buy a Geo and get over it.

nice man, for a minute there I thought you knew what you were doing math wise , not that I could do any better good laugh and I agree with you if good gas mileage was hi goal , he should of gotten a different car ......

You are correct in regards to the Geo (specifically the 1990 Geo Metro); that car gets great MPG. However, much like the entirety of your post, it is ignorant (to say the least) that one should drive or buy a Geo if MPG are important. MPG can be deemed important despite whatever car you drive or buy.

I disagree. Anyone can obtain "good" gas mileage in an RA (depending on how you define "good"). Just because the RA MPG does not compare to that of a Geo, does not mean one should have gotten a different car (based on your assumption that one's "good" gas mileage is in fact a "hi goal"). There is a balance (read: RA and "good" gas mileage); you can have your cake and eat it too (again, depending on how you define "good").

That being said, if you stated that MPG was the highest of priorities (IMO 35+ MPG) in selecting a car, than certainly an RA would be the obvious choice of what not to drive or buy. Thereby leaving a Geo (or something similar in terms of high MPG) the superior choice.

There is no magic engineering out there.

All 2.4 liter engines get effectively the same gas mileage. All 1.8 liter gas engines get the same. All 6 liter V8's get the same. It doesn't matter who the manufacturer is.

Claims of a few mpg difference between makes can be negated by a few hard stoplight launches. Toyota Camry with 2.4 gets better mileage than our RA? Damn, look who drives those things - blue hair or Tilley hats - ugh - and you're behind them because the slowest always lead the pack down the road.

The latest really high Hyundai mpg figures they show in the advertisements for their small cars are BS in real life - test magazines show they are no better day-to-day than other makes.

Like posters said, it's all in how you drive. And the RA is so much fun, we just let'er rip most of the time.

Mileage matters most? Jetta/Golf diesel, doesn't matter if you tromp on it from every stoplight, cruise at 85 mph for hours, you'll always get 50 mpg at worst. I know, we've used up two over the past 25 years. Gas tank size 55 liters (14.5 gallons) gets 1100 km (700 miles) every time.

I'm getting terrible mileage that's all I know. 400km to a tank taking it easy on the throttle. 275km/tank when my foots on it. Maybe it's time to throw the long tube of my CAI back on so i can get 550 600km again??? Was like that in the winter to until i took the long tube off then I was getting little warmer air into the motor not -60C going in.
