Stock airbox piece with AEM SRI?

I finally got a AEM SRI for my car. When I first bought my car whoever had it before cut off the stock airbox piece and just put a big cone filter on the end of the hose which looked ugly. He also threw away that front airbox piece that the air comes in. While I was installing my AEM SRI I noticed on the instructions it showed to leave that front airbox piece on the car. This makes me kinda worried like is that piece supposed to be there and is it going to affect anything without it? I looked around and I found one for $100 which sucks. Can anyone help me out on this one?

you can leave it off and it won't hurt anything, mine is off, you're intake temperatures will be higher though, but you can get a heat shield or something to alleviate it.

What Cranswick said. Your just going to get more heat soak into the SRI. I recently did a custom setup for my SRI, fabricated a heat shield and everything. The air scoop isnt needed but it helps.

If your really concerned about the heat soak though, Id just swap that SRI for a CAI. Thats if you dont want to pay 100$ for a piece of plastic.

Best of luck!

How did you make a heat shield? Can you give me some pics or ideas? Thx.

I built mine out of sheet metal. And I didnt take any pics during the process even though I meant to. But I do have the pics from another member here who inspired my custom build. He sent me these pics so I could get a better idea on how to set it up.

Here is another pic that I marked with blue arrows to show where I ended up bolting mine on. My filter is a bit bigger than and a bit further up, so that setup worked a bit better for me.

Best of luck tho. I hope those help. Lemme know how it works for ya!

Thx a bunch now I have an idea of what to do. I might get some sheet metal and bolt it underneath then try to bend it around the side somehow lol. Just wondering but what is that piece of grey tubing for on the few pics?

Thats pipe insulator. I didnt put any on the top of mine. I did however put it around the hole I made for the air scoop to avoid and rubbing or scraping.

I havent done it yet but like the guy's in the picture Im going to be painting it with heat resistant black spray paint that you can pick up at lowes or somewhere. Makes it look good, and may possibly allow it to reject a bit of heat that thin metals usually conduct.

Sweet. Thx again! I was looking on other forums and some guy made a heat shield out of a small rubbermaid garbage can. What do you think of this?

Meh... I wouldnt do it, looks like trash (no pun intended). I dont see how that thing is getting any fresh air once he shuts the hood anyway. I doubt the same setup would work under our hoods anyway. Its kinda cramped once you get into attempting to fit something down in there.

IIRC, Flip had a pretty nice shield.

Don't waste your time with any of that shield stuff. The SRI is going to suck hot air no matter what. You need an isolated still air box away from engine heat. The only place is behind one of the fog lights.

Heat shields work, but only as good as they are built.
If you have more air going in than the stock intake, then the extra air will be warmer than the stock air intake without the heat shield. With a heat shield, the extra air taken in will be slightly cooler than without a heat shield, but not as cold as with a CAI, or stock intake (but will have more air than the stock intake).
