timing belt snapped
timing belt snapped
well it happend to me this morning i went to best buy started fine and brought me to and from best buy fine but later on that morning i was going to the gym and it started fine im driving away from my house and i went to accelerate and all i felt was a jerk and it shut off around 3k rpm's. so i didnt think it was the timing belt at all went to go get my battery tested and it was fine guy told me to check my timing belt and their it was snapped. the bad part is i kept cranking the car thinking it was the alternator
any idea's? should i take the valve cover off and check? snap some pictures?

you have to take the head off to get at the valves...you can take the head off if you want, but i would get a new belt on and test for compression...opening the valve cover will tell you nothing...
he was the one who did it last time so i wonder if the yellow dots are still on the cam gears for alignment after we installed the timing belt. hopefully all is well.i love my little car and i had a bunch of aftermarket parts for it

my guess is lack of maintenance, or improper installation...that's like something you should inspect, not to a weird degree, but the upper timing cover is fairly easy to remove, and it's something you should be keeping your eye on like tire wear...
sorry about your luck, but there is still a possibility you could replace the belt and have compression, mine failed on a 3-4k rpm downshift if i remember correctly, and i put the transmission in neutral quickly because i felt it die, but none of my valves were bent. on the other hand if you motor has a lot of mileage, it could be a good time to replace all the oil seals in the head, and have the valves done. machine work is pricey though, but generally not as much as labour hours at a shop.

oem...4g63 valves appearently have a larger diameter stem, i don't know of any other valves that will fit properly...there's not realy any reason to "upgrade".
another cause of belt failure could be contamination, such as coolant from the water pump, or oil from the crank or oil pump.
if the valves are toast you could get a used head from a wrecked 4g69 powered vehicle.

Yeah there's no need to upgrade the valves , ferrea can make a set for around 400 bucks but you can probably pick up a used head for cheaper locally. If you can't find one I have an extra head I could sell you ,but shipping will be a little costly since its heavy as hell.

so if the valves are bent just replace the valves and thats it?
the cam gear was really dusty and at the bottom by the udp the belt was bunched up
so im thinking something seized up to cause that.
the belt didn't look that bad...other than the big break in it lol.
but it doesn't look like it should have snapped.
