temp control stem???
temp control stem???
i busted my temperature controls stem and knob. it got stuck and i got a bit too forcefull and the stem snapped.
so my question is this... are all 02-06 hvac systems the same ? is there a way i can just replace the temperate control stem or do i need to replace the whole unit?
thanks,
Tom

Search, This has happened many times.
It was a flaw with the 03 systems, I had a 03 lancer same thing happened to that, I never fixed it i would just reach my hand underneath the dash to adjust at the gear.
I do believe you need a new HVAC control unit. I do not know if the single part is replaceable.
The reason they break is due to the gears under the dash, I would suggest if you do get a new HVAC panel, you replace the gears as well, (i believe they're about 6-10 dollars or so) but this will ensure that it will not break from the gears again a second time.

stem=the white piece the actual knob slides onto that changes the temperature control from cold to hot. i didn't know what else to call it.
i have had the troubled stuck knob for a couple years and I know/knew that I could fix it by replacing the gear units, but i figured that i would only replace it if it broke as i could normally change the temp after playing with it for a few seconds. i pushed my luck too far and snapped it.
so at this point it looks like i will need to find a whole replacement unit and also change the gears on the new unit so this doesn't happen again.

cross-referencing models is very time consuming, but yes, all 2002-2006 (not evo) lancers have the same HVAC controller...the evo looks the same but the part number is different.
get yourself a copy of CAPS or ASA for part number reference, it's pretty simple to use. I'm not pulling these part numbers out of my ***, and it's time consuming looking up parts all the time, lol.

I supper glued the shaft back together. Than made a plaster mold. Mold material at hobby store. I then poured hot zinc in the mold. Metal gears now. I have had this in the car for 5 years now. Works great.
