Installing Underhood Brass Shifter Bushings
Installing Underhood Brass Shifter Bushings
Tools Required:
Phillips screw driver
Regular screw driver
Needle nose pliers
The bushings we are replacing are under the master cylender near the back of the transmission. I have a CAI installed, so I do not know if airbox removal is necissary or not. This is a fairly reasy mod, it took less than 20 minuits.
Step 1.
Buy bushings here.
Step 2.
Remove clips holding both end links. Pull both the end links off the pins. Pry out the rubber bushings with a phillips screw driver. What worked faily well was sliding the end of the screwdriver through the center of the end link bushing and prying sideways. Be careful not to bend your cable. You will not be re-installing the washers. I put all my parts in a bag, just in case I need them later.

Step 3.
Clean the posts with solvent. Apply anti-sieze to the posts and inside the brass bushing holes. Slide the large brass bushing with the grooved side towads the firewall in to the lower cable end link eye. Pull the shifter arm towards the driver side of the car so you have the maximum cable length to use, then slip the end link and brass bushing over the pin. Install the E clip on the bushing and reinstall the retaining clip.
Slide the small brass bushing in the cable end link for the top cable with the grooved end up. Slide the end link over the pin and install the E clip. Reinstall the retaining clip through the pin.
This is what it looks like all finished. The large bushing is difficult to see, and difficult to get to. If you install the top shifter cable first, it will make getting access to it very difficult. You can see the large bushing to the upper left of the visable bushing. It is in a vertical position.

This is a comparison picture of the two styles of bushings. Note the E clips on the brass bushings. Be sure to install that groove towards the end of the pins.

This made a big improvement in shifter feel. The shifts are very crisp and precise.
Enjoy!

Nice HOWTO! I never heard of this mod, though. Is is ment to be more of a dressup mod or a performance mod? Crisper shifts is obvious a plus, but is it really that much of a difference? If so, I may consider it when the budget recovers
Its not a dress up mod, its totally performance. It makes a HUGE difference in shifter feel. The shifts are very precise, it feels like shifting a high end performance car. This mod with the in car shifter bushings and B&M kit would be SICK!
Nick, click on the step 1 link "get bushings here". They are listed as EVO 8 bushings, but they install perfectly. They are from Speed Source.

I just ordered some, I'll let you know how it goes, they probably take a cpl weeks to get here though.
Oh ya, is there any downside to this mod? will these bushings wear?

They will wear less that the rubber stock ones. One of the other EVO owners here did the sort shifter install and these in an afternoon. He says that they make a huge difference.
The link to buy them "here" in the how to is a good price. Lancer shop is 32.xx for a set. Saves $5.
I am very pleased with past purchases from lancershop and they have a kit for 109 for shifter and brass shifter bushings in and out. I am going to go that route. The package makes up the difference.

I can attest to the difference. I have had the two peice underhood kit in for about 4 mnths and it's great! Makes shifting feel much better. Now the 8 peice interior kit doesn't make huge difference at all. One of the best $30 mods available if you ask me.
EDIT: I've seen no negative affects from these in 4 mths. They do not wear out at all.

Do you get any increased vibrations throught the shifter? Like, I'm sure the rubber bushings serve some sort of purpose, like maybe reducing road vibration through the shifter connection.
Either way, I've ordered them, and they're going in as soon as I get them, possibly a short shifter at the same time

i dont know i just ordered it, but i am very reluctant to put them on, reason being it seems like being rubber has to serve a purpose, cause the tranny moves and if the linkage is to gith then i feel like it might pull out of gear i just dont know dont wanna do it and f u c k up the tranny
I push my car fairly hard and I haven't had any problems at all. Install them, but keep the factory equipment that you take off. If you end up not liking them, just put the originals back in. Believe me, you will not be disappointed at all.
Ya, I've been driving the last 24 hours without the center console in and I'll tell you, that shifter housing moves around quite a bit with just the rubber bushings, Icant wait till I get the brass ones in...whenever that'll be, how long did it take for them to ship to you?
