Well, no matter how we see it, the goverment sees it as being very illegal.
With Short Ram Intake, your dragging in all the hot air from the rad. Even if it comes with a 'heat sheild', the heat sheild will just get heat soaked and act as a "pre-heat" as the air passes over it.
We have choosen for our CAI to go to the lower corner and out the plastic flap to the "cold air" of the fender wheel. It has yeilded a substantial difference from the "short ram" design. Funny, people love the price of Short Ram Intake for a 12" of pipe and a filter, that only gives noise and loose on the bottom end?
Regarding the phobia of vapor or "hydro locking a motor".Hell you'd have to sink the car in the water over the intake manifold level to hydro lock it.I'd be more worried about the crappy filter companies out there that still use paper as a filter agent...gets wet and disappears up your throttle body.

From an objective point of view I have to say yes, no matter how we see it, for Canadian Government, ANY modification made to a car, no matter installed by an authorized dealership or on your own garage is still illegal. Thats includes all: muffler, body kit, alteza light, etc. it is forbiden by our government. What is the final cause though? Money, money and money. For me, as longs as we know what we are doing, be a responsible driver and don't kick other on the butts, it is fine (within reasons of course).

Window tint your ok as long as it's not on the front windows.
Basically the police can do that if they want to, it is against the law even to tinting 60% for the front windows. However it is subjected to the individual cop. One of our associate/owner of the shop, Ian with his MazdaSpeed hit a deer last two week just in the morning before he has to deliver his car for the show at square one. He hit the deer while running 180K/hr, basically smash up his front end. The cops show up and after inspecting the car, they really impressed what he has done to his car. They even sit on the rear and watch the DVD with him while waiting for the tow truck to arrived. Ian showed and explained to them what he has done with his car, turbo upgrade, etc, etc, etc, and most of all, the 2 huge 10Lb Bottles of juicer on the trunk. They just amaze.
One of the cop came to the shop last week to buy a racing seats for his mustang.
Basically depend on how you handle the situation while answering their questions if you got pull over. Give them respect, however don't be stupid either and you should know where you are going with the conversation.

It is approx. 1 in a 100 the cop will stop you because of the tinting, even for your muffler noise for instance, but once they caught you speeding or street racing, they going to detail your car like crazy...this is illegal, this is illegal, that is illegal..on..on...on.....you will received 1k ticket
As I mentioned before, drive responsibly, you will be ok

both short ram and cold air has it's place in the performance tuning.. you can't discount short ram just because everybody and their brother thinks cold air is better..
a properly tuned short ram will yield gains in certain RPM ranges .. short ram gives you better throttle response and intake vilocity

So if i add CAI into my car and drive in 2 places: Arizona and Alaska, i will get a greater hp in Alaska than Arizona because its colder there???

Every performance modification from Turbo Charge to Jet Engine :-) subjected to the law of physic, namely o2 = Burning and burning = power. People try to get more cold air for their engine by venting their hood, however most of us by installing a cold air intake. Why cold air? Well cold air is denser than hot air, this means more O2 which means fuel burns better which means more power. In fact every 10-11°c you drop the temperature you increase almost any cars power by 1 hp. Remember, less o2 less burning and more o2 more burning. The temperature under the hood can get up to 70°c while it can be alot colder outside. By 5" opening to the stock air box, this alone will give you a lil boost( 4558mm surface area vs 3165mm thats 30% more ). CAI or cone filter gets at least 6% more air volume than the stock air box ( so says the MAFS or Mass Air Flow Sensor ), which is good for 8 hp or more ( more if the air is colder less if it is warm ).

Actually Yes, you are right. Your output is different between driving during winter time and during summer time.
to each their own, i have made my own SRI and CAI and both had it's advantages, what I said about the throttle response and such are what I saw when I had gone through about 12 different designs total.
intake velocity is very much part of intake tuning as tempeature is..
