So I'd figured i'd give this a go. Took about 10 minutes.

The first pic is the filter after I took it outta the car and banged all the crap off. There's other tutorials on how to take it out, so i'm not including it here.

The large white filter I got is from walmart for 4 dollars.

You have to remove the old filters from the plastic housing. they're seperated into three sections. It's glued in there so I just cut it out with a knife.

I laid the car filter on top of the large one to see where i would have to cut out. Then cut a piece of the proper length from the large filter. With this filter, it didn't really matter the width of the cut, because it can be folded to fit the car filter.

You can see the picture of the piece of the filter I had cut out. I made three of these. As you can see, it's too big to fit one of the three slots, but i just scrunched it together to fit.

So for 4 dollars and ten minutes, you can have a homemade cabin air filter.

 

yea, well, I'm questioning the filtering capability of the homemade one cut from a furnace filter VS the activated charcoal filter.

 

The factory cabin air filter isn't activated carbon. It's just crappy fiberglass mesh. You can spend ca$25 on a good furnace air filter that captures particles as small as 0.3 micron. Buy the largest you can find for the price (like 20x24 inches), you'll get more cabin filters out of one furnace filter.

$45 for the crappy mesh filter at the dealer, or ca$25 for 6 good homemade filters at Lowe's or Home Depot?

 

yeah mine was 16x25 for 4 dollars. coulda cleaned up the edges of the filter housing a little more, but i wasn't too worried about it. I used some of the leftover filter to replace the filter in my vacuum cleaner as well lol.

 

Great idea. I was thinking off doing the same thing. I was wondering, if the cut air filter will stay in place. Would air pressure from the blower fan pull the air filter from the housing?

 

where is the cabin filter located?

 

remove your glovebox... its right behind there held on by 2 philips screws

 

Glue it? Velcro? Paperclips? lol i dont know just figure some way to anchor it down
