TTP, don't state something unless your 100% sure your right and are willing to financially secure that statement. Flashing the ECU does or doesn't void the warranty based on what dealer you go to basically. Some will say it will, which I could understand seeing as how you've changed several factors as to how the engine runs. How could it not when after doing it you get these CEL's? Pretty sure the manufacturer wouldn't want to be held responsible for that.

Dealers have no ability to read the ECU mapping and comb through fuel, timing and boost maps to investigate any changes.

With that said, there is no way to void a warranty if they do not possess the tools to compare maps.

Can't they just use a cable and program to read the maps (like all of us can?) I'm sure some techs must know what the base maps are. (I'm not trying to start anything here, I honestly don't know the answer to this. I'm just looking for solid information here). I'm guessing what your saying is they really don't go that deep, not that they can't? And if they CAN then they would void if they checked? Again I'm looking for answers, I've never flashed before, and know nothing about tuning myself.

The dealer I called said they are not sure on the warranty. I was told (and searches online go along with this) that dealers will often check the ecu's counter as to how many times its been flashed and decide whether or not to probe you about it.

The majority of links i find out there state that the dealers don't care. Afterall, if they dont do work on your car they dont make money (as little as warranty work might be)

Just a personal experience with my dealer.

They told me that so long as there are no CELs, the tune looks stock and the bolt on part didnt obviously cause the damage, your warranty is fine.

So if your flashing it yourself, have the original rom file, clear all CELs and they stay off while at the dealer and do a quality job during installation using quality parts..... you wont have a problem.

Rule of thumb: Buy parts from the most reputable dealers with the highest quality parts, dont run tunes that pop CELs and ALWAYS retain your original tune with a way to flash it back to stock at the drop of a hat.

Note: Unless you have the funds to be slinging around and just dont care, dont install parts that pop CELs on the stock tune. Its an easy way to get into warranty trouble for those that are concerned.

No, they use proprietary Mitsubishi scantools. They do not tune vehicles.

There is no ECU reflash counter.

I coulda swore if you scroll up into the evo forums, there already a thread about this, and lots of people are saying you can detect flashes and how many times it has been flashed. But what the dealer DOES NOT know, if if the flash came from another dealer. So in simple terms, if you go to the dealer, say you took it in to another dealer and they flashed it with the updated settings for safety precautions.

easy.

That is exactly what I was told. They can see the number of times, but not what the tune was nor when it was. All they do is ask you about it, and you need to be smart enough to say it was another dealer or something.

I'm sure that's all true, but there are still way too many "if's" and other variables for a tuning company to tell you that it certainly won't. If your going to say that then i would have to make you assume responsibility of the warranty should it be voided, as per your assurance.

ok i personally know a mechanic for mitsubishi he has owned 3 evo's and he said for SURE that yes it WILL void your warranty ams so far the debate is whether or not they can detect it , but then he also said YES to that . . . it does have the 'fail safe' , all he told me was if i did anything to my car like that to just not bring it in and for service and hope that nothing messes up.

I have not done any mods to my car yet just visuals but when i carried my car in for the 3000 mark service it was free so i figured i might as well they told me we already have a recall on the hood release cable. Something not very important well performance wise anyways but still already a recall so they checked everything in my car even the ecu......

Anyone with plans to claim something under their powertrain warranty should not touch their vehicle, period. It is as simple as that.

If you want to modify your vehicle, you assume all risks regardless of whether the dealer will or will not honor your warranty.
