k&n drop in filter?

i was just wondering what results anyone has had with a k&n dropin filter. i noticed the the evox guys have picked up decent power with them becasue apparently they are tuned very rich, just curious if we were in the same boat.

I know that Road Race Engineering tested some high-flow drop-in filters on a stock Ralliart and there were minimal gains at best. Not even 5 hp. A drop-in filter wouldn't even be worth considering on a RA until after you have upgraded the IC.

If you are to the point where you need to replace your stock filter, then it might not be a bad idea to get a K&N, but that has more to do with never having to buy another air filter.

I have a K&N drop-in and am quite pleased with the results. Even without adjusting the fuel maps it did lean the car out some (yes it is rich from the factory). It also allowed the bov to be heard more clearly.

For the amount of HP gains you get from a K&N, you are better off saving your money and getting some exhaust. Whether it be a drop-in or a cold air intake, they aren't the great for your engine. The reason for the HP gains is larger holes in the filter media, which means fine debris can pass through. Once the debris enters the combustion chamber is will start wearing out your pistin rings faster. This is great for people that like rebuilding engines, not great for people who like their engine to last a bit longer.

-My 2 cents

I think the filtration process and effieciency of after-market drop-in filters over factory units is why the purchase is warranted. With that also comes an increase in horsepower as well as added gas mileage with some units. I think if the cost were to come down on after-market cotton/foam type filters we will see them integrated into factory cars over paper type.

I bought the HKS Super Hybrid Filter, that was designed for the X but also fits the R/A. So far I am pleased with the slight performance upgrade, until I decide on what CAI and exhaust I will go with. Tuning is also a must and right now the support is very limited and in the infant stages, we will have to see how the R/A's are supported by the after-market.

I got my K&N drop in for the gas and tad bit of sound and HP difference. I must disagree with the notion that spall particles will get in. Even in a normal filter particles that small will get through
