Is Removing Tint Easy?

Hey guys,

I just got a fix it ticket -_- for my front license plate & window tint (here in California)... and the place I got it tinted at is going to charge me $40 a window (making it $80 for my front)

I ordered my front license plate mount (got here in like 3 days! great service), that should be pretty easy just a drill & some time.

I was reading online how to do window tint and there are some different theories. I figured I'd get your opinions on what I should do, the cop said just get a razor or a scraper (from home depot) and spray bottle of water and 30 minutes to an hour of your time... Other guides online say use goo-gone with a razor, others a trash bag with some heavy duty chemical

Anyone done this before and please share your experience

Thanks

No removing tint is a PITA. Getting the tint off the window isn't all that hard but getting all the glue off is extremely time consuming.

My tint was factory but if yours was a film based tint the just use a window scraper too start and you should be able to pull it off.. use a citrus based glue remover as it won’t damage your interior and works great to get all that crap off.

This! Let the adhesive heat up, and attack it with a razor blade. Should come off fairly easy.

Goo-Gone is great for getting the left-over adhesive off. That is what I used for my last car. It is a PITA though.

A good way to loosen up the tint:
  1. Spray the tint with water
  2. Seal the window with a garbage bag and tape
  3. Leave it in the sun or somewhere hot so the humidity rises and the tint wicks in the moisture
  4. Peel away!

just lift the tint from a corner and peel, whatever doesnt come up just scrape off with a razor blade, removing tint is so easy. to remove the residue bug and tar remover, glass cleaner with some elbow grease or goo gone will work.

DO NOT PAY to remove tint unless it was only going to cost you 5 bucks

One of the worst jobs I've ever had to do. Careful not to nick the rear window defrost if you need to take it off. Heat is the key

Lol Well it went well aprox. ~ 35 minutes per window;

Just some advice to anyone that has do it. Get a small spray bottle with soap & warm water with a razor. The only hard part was the corners that you can get your fingers into. So when you come to that part start where you can create tension and pull away from the corner slowly, spraying water every so often. Then to remove excess gunk spray the window with the water and run the razor across the window.

It was easy to remove the tint off my rear and hatch windows on my gti.

Let it sit in the sun on a hot day, it will make it easier. Use a razorblade to make a starting point slice. Go from there and try to keep the tint in large pieces, it is easier. The glue can come off with windex and towel, just may take a few times.

if you are going to do the rear window, be careful to not slice the defroster lines with the razorblade.
