38000 miles and already problems
Final update: got my car back.. I paid nothing but I saw the warranty claim. Cost 779 dollars. 90 for the 3 day rental. 240 in parts and the rest was labor. All said and done with.
However, it is concerning. I'm just thankful I recently switched jobs and no longer commute. I drive exactly 0 miles business week down from 200.
Interesting.
The video noted "oil changes" and "aggressive driving" as leading causes to timing chain stretch.
OP, how often were you changing oil? Were you tracking the car, or mostly DD?
My other car is a 240SX and the engine has issues with the timing chain and tensioner. Has a pretty short life at 60K.
Anyway, glad to see it was covered under warranty.

Oil changes every 5k.. And aggressive driving.. Umm.. Nothing to severe.. Except for the occasional "gotta get there quick" run. I also Ran it at a strip once.. Prolli five runs there. But besides that.. It's my DD so Im not to hard on it
My 2 cents.
Last week my SES light came on accompanied by a rough idle. Before I had a chance to take it to
a loud clanking noise starting coming from the engine and kaput. So I had it towed to
and they wanted to look at the timing chain. The dealer told me that that model was having a problem with the chain stretching under load. Sure enough stretched chain that lead to a bent valve.
Luckily the warranty is covering repairs buuuuutttt I have been carless for 4 days now and
hasnt provided me with a loaner or rental. Im running out of sick days.
So to recap 09 RA 36000 miles regular oil changes no mods no angry driving. Service good other than having to walk everywhere.

i had the same problem. took 'em TWO WEEKS to fix. and all they did was replace the chain, sprockets, and tensioner. they said there was no other damage to the valves or anything but my car hasnt felt right since. power seems to surge in and out under acceleration. right at 38,000 miles, too. had my car since may of 09 and i hate it. wanted an evo and settled for a ralliart. somehow let myself be fooled into believing that the sst was a manual transmission. wish i still had my 03 cooper s. sorry for my typing.
Do any of the scheduled factory services/mainteance intervals in the owner's manual include a check of the timing chain to make sure it's not going bad? I don't usually take my car to the dealer, but maybe I should let them look at this at some point so it doesn't happen to me!

well, i've started having hard starts again and my SES light is on again. took it back to the service dept and they wanted to keep it so they gave me a loaner again. hopefully it won't take two weeks this time. ironic how i just posted about this two days ago and now its in the shop again. seriously, if these are the problems i have at 38,700 miles, what's it gonna be like at 80,000?
