Snow chains

I'm taking a trip to big bear, but they may require tire chains, my question is do I have to purchase 4 chains or can I run just the back or front. Also what and where would you reccomend I buy chains.

^ What does him having to buy an evo have anythng to do with it...? Ralliarts are AWD as well.

Here is a website I found. So basically, unless you don't have snow tires, you don't need chains.

http://kbhr933.com/weather-roads/big-bear-roads/

State Route 38 (Big Bear to Redlands)
OPEN – No Restrictions - R0

State Route 18 (Big Bear City to Lucerne Valley)
OPEN – No Restrictions - R0

State Route 18 (Big Bear Lake to Running Springs)
OPEN – No Restrictions - R0
Flagging and one way traffic will continue , from 7:30am to 4:30pm, at the Big Bear dam to accommodate the Big Bear bridge replacement project.
There are often heavy traffic delays on this route during weekend and holiday drive times. Consider using alternate routes 38 or 18 to Lucerne to avoid these types of delays.

State Route 330 (Running Springs to Highland)
OPEN – No Restrictions - R0
There are often heavy traffic delays on this route during weekend and holiday drive times.

Highways in the Big Bear Valley
OPEN – No Restrictions - R0

Tire Chain Key
R-0: No chains required
R-1: Chains required, unless you have snow tires
R-2: Chains required, except on 4-wheel-drives with snow tires on all four wheels
R-3: Chains required, no exceptions

Also one of my friends visited last year and he said just keep an eye on the weather and the amount of snow that might fall, and drive carefully. If you head up there with no chains and you end up needing them, he said there are plenty of places (at least 10-15) locally that sell them.

Thanx for the info yahh, so I guess I won't need chains but if I do I'll just get some there, I was just curious how the awd would respond if the rear wheels have chains, probably not good, I was just making sure. Oh yeah what the heck does buying an evo have to do with my question, I have snow tires but wasn't sure if they still required chains. Like stated before ralliart is all wheel drive.

^this weekend I was easily getting around plowing 10 inches of snow only having snow tires. I'd think you would get hung up on something because of ground clearance before you would need chains for traction.

This was quite hard to read. Seriously, punctuation.

Stud-less snow tires are the way to go.

He just said that you are more likely to plow your bumper into something than need snow chains. I don't live anywhere near serious snow, so I wouldn't know. However, this comment still makes no sense to me. You just reworded his comment, only backwards.

[QUOTE=yahh;8890482]^ What does him having to buy an evo have anythng to do with it...? Ralliarts are AWD as well.

I think he is referring to the US Top Gear episode from 2 weeks ago where Tanner drove an Evo X down a ski hill.

I was disappointed they didn't say which tires they had on the car.

Most people would assume it can do that stock.

Oh well, good advertisement for Mitsubishi.

I would not recommend snow chains. Page 7-37 in the Owner's Manual states "Tire chains cannot be used on your vehicle. The clearance between chains and the body is not sufficient to allow proper clearance, and the vehicle body might be damaged."

If you decide to use them then be very careful. Make sure they are put on correctly and drive slow.

I'm sure you mean cables, but same thing.

I only ran them once in my car and they rubbed on my struts. It was less than a mile from where I had to put them on and drive to in Mammoth. I have then upgraded to snow tires and I carry chains to make the people happy at Big Bear.

Shameless plug... I have a spare brand new set of chains (SCC Super Z) that fit stock Evo 9 wheels. Rated best cable chains.
