just wondering, if mitsubishi has been putting in black boxes aka "data recorders" in our vehicles. i caught an article about this and was thinking about invasion of privacy. any ideas if they are doing this. i know all american car makers are.

It's in the manual and yes you do have an EDR in your Ralliart.

This.

ECUs have been recording this kind of data for years now. Example: self adjusting learning ECUs have been found in the Honda Civic since at least 2001. They adjust fuel trims based on a running average of what the map and o2 sensors have been reading over the last couple weeks, or longer. Also, the CVT trans found in the base 9g Lancer has a TCU that adjusts the "gearing" based on the driving habits of the owner. You'd be surprised just how much of this kind of info can be found hiding out in your ECU.

To pull it out you'd need a factory diagnostic unit, my memory is a bit vague in how this used to be handled it's most likely protected by algorithm theoretically it could be cracked

It's programmed into your ECU and is tied into many of your other systems. Even if you could remove it, you probably wouldn't want to since it's woven into so many things.
