Are you saying that if the battery goes dead in the electronic key, that you couldn't start the car using the manual key? I don't thing that's right, but I'm no expert. What would be the point of even having an emergency manual key in that case, other than to unlock the doors and get in the car. You'd be able to get in the car, and then you'd just have to sit there with a car that won't move, which I can't imagine that's the case I've been getting a "low key battery" warning on my dashboard, and I thought about putting in a fresh battery, but then I figured that even if it goes dead I could use the manual key to open the doors and start the car. If that's not true, then I guess I better get out to Radio Shack and buy a new battery ASAP before I get stranded in a blizzard or frigid weather...

The key is for when the battery dies, but you still need the computer chip to unlock the ignition system.
At least I'm pretty sure. Don't we need to flip the key around (with the back part now in the fob) in order to work? Hmmm, maybe I should try a little experiment.

You are correct. The manual goes through this in great detail. The car sends enough current through the key to power the fob so the car can start.

Sooo, the bottom line then is that I don't need to worry about not being able to start the car with the manual key if the battery on my electronic key goes dead, correct???
