car key

When i got my car it only came with one key. im afraid to lose it and be stuck with none. so i went to a dealership in colorado today to get a new one cut. the key was 50 bucks because it has a chip in it. they wanted 70 more bucks to program the key to work with my car. right now it can only unlock the car. is there a way i can program it my self or am i screwed and forced to pay the $70

I had one key when I bought my car. A local locksmith was able to get me a key and program it for 70 bucks out the door. They also threw in a free key for my 72 bug. It was a stock mitsubishi key, they told me they had to use the stock one. They had a thing that looked like a big scanner they hooked up to the DLC and programmed the new one. Call around to locksmiths first.

Jeff,

I turned in both sets of keys to the Evo when I sold it, it sounds like the dealership lost the 2nd key or simply forgot to give it to you...
