Is the dealer trying to play me? key program?

okay im not talking about the actual key and not the keyless button....

so i misplaced my key this morning and GUESS where my spare key was... yep in the center console.....

So i run over to the STEALERSHIP to get a spare key made and i was told that the ACTUAL KEY not the keyless button has to be programed for the car this makes no sense to me bc the key i have doesn't seem to have a chip in it anywhere, plus the 10$ "door only key" he cut for me will start the car also... i'm def not spending 100$ for a new key and through searching it seems all i can find is info on programming the fob.. unless mitsubishi found a way to magically hide the chip under the rubber and engineer a way for it to send a signal to the switch somehow i'm a little confused here?

Most newer cars have a "chip" in the key. its in the rubber portion that attaches to the key ring IIRC.

yes they do, but i have my doubts about the evo 9 key... or the 8 key.... esp since my "door only all metal key" works to start the car and open the doors.. this dealership down here doesn't even know that evo's have turbos... i only buy my cabin air filters from them needless to say

There is a chip in the rubber of the key, and normally is required to start, but you can disable that. Is your car used? Perhaps a previous owner disabled it. If you're sure your door only key that's all metal starts the car too, then you can just inform them the anti-theft is disabled and hopefully they'll cut you a spare key.

My door only key will start my 8 but it will only run for a few seconds and shut off. So there has to be something different between the 2 keys.

I've had to have newer Mitsu keys programmed, there is a chip in them. I personally watched the guy program it to make sure I wasn't getting the reach-around.

All Keys VIII and IX have chips in them if your metal Home Depot/Lowes/HW Store key starts the car then somone disabled the immobilizer in the ECU

What Ive heard is that there is a chip integrated into each cars factory keys. Both the key and the chip must be present for the car to start. If you left your spare in the center counsel while you started the car with the "door only" key, it would start because it still detects the chip present. Your right about the dealerships though, some of them don't know anything about their own cars.

The chip is the reason why your car has an 'immobilizer'

Will the Immobilizer most likely be disabled if you are running an AEM EMS?

An un-programmed key will still open your door though. Then you can get your spare.
