programming ignition key
programming ignition key
Hi,
I bought my Evo slightly used from a dealer and it only came with one key. The wanted to charge me what sounded like a large amount ($150) for the second key and wouldn't include it in our negotiated price. Now I have found out it seems you need to have the dealer program another key with a scan tool. Has anyone been able to program a new key to start the car without the dealer scan tool?
Thanks in advance!

If you have the manual, you can program the second key yourself. You need one good key to program the new key in. I had the dealer cut me a key and then I programmed it myself using the instructions in the owners manual. I don't have my manual next to me. If someone doesn't post a scan of it, I'll do it when I get home tonight.
I would've told him to forget it except that the next lowest priced evo was $2000 more, so I figured the key issue wasn't worth it! I am still waiting for my owner's manual to be shipped to me. Keep in mind that the Evo was technically used when I bought it (had 4700 miles on it from the previous owner).
Take care,

I stand corrected. Quoting from the manual:
"You can program new keys to the system if you have two valid (already registered) keys..."
Maybe try another dealership. It shouldn't cost more than $50 for the key from a dealership plus a tech's help in getting it programmed with their tool.

Does anyone know of a dealer in/around NYC who's more reasonable than $79 for the programming? This was the quote I got both from Bay Ridge Mitsu (Brooklyn) and Potamkin Mitsu (Manhattan).
Thanks again!

Programming a key without the scan tool can be done, however it requires TWO already programmed keys to do so. If you do this yourself, you can save some dough on an extra key by:
1) buy a blank key (about $25 from a dealership...you can call Rick 801.225.7715 and he'll order you one)
2) get it cut at any hardware store from your original key (shouldn't cost more than $2)
3) program your new key to the car:
Ok...for some unknown reason, I can't attach the JPEG files of the scans of the manual which shows how to do this. If someone out there wants to give me their email address, I'll send you the pages of the manual with the instructions and then maybe YOU can upload them. I have small files which should upload fine, but the site won't let me. I don't get it.
