Ralliart for 17 year old?
If I had a RA as a 16-17 year old it would be dangerous.
I had a '98 Z24 when I was 17, which was in 2004/2005 and even with that car all riced up I drove like a complete asshat. Would tap out the speedometer @ 170km/h on city streets at night. I never got any tickets, but now that i've matured seems like karma has come around, got a few tickets going 10-12 over the posted limit.

10-12 km not miles. So 8 or so miles over the posted limit.
In my opinion I should have been dinged a bunch of times when I was 16-18, thinking everything was carefree and no one could get serious hurt or killed. Granted, most of the time I drove look a tool at late hours with mostly empty streets, that doesn't justify it though.
Then when I have an SRT-4 i would be to ***** **** to romp on it, rarely even floor it all the way through 2nd gear.
Not sure if you have already purchased the car for the kid, but i feel like you should hear my story, its rather long sorry, but necessary.
I had a Civic that i had started hooking up at age 15, seeing as i got it as a hand me down before i could drive, i started working on it. I eventually got it and was good until i started drinking. One night i blacked out (dont remember ANYTHING) And went out for taco's at 155am, it closed at 2am, so i rushed out and was hitting something like 110mph when i knocked my glasses off my face. Seeing as i have horrible sight, i couldnt see. Had to slam on the brakes to try and find my glasses, fishtailed into a fire hydrant, two street signs and a tree. Luckily i was alone, and nobody else was involved. I was alright aside from being picked up for DUI.
One year later, i was still on probation and had a restricted license for work, and everything was going good, so i picked up an Acura RSX-S, But seeing as i didnt learn my lesson the first time, and i was still a heavy drinker, It happened again, was out after work before going home, and then someone wanted to race their R32 against me, due to the alcohol i was completely miss-shifting and grinding every gear, but i was too intoxicated to see the signs that I was not coherent enough for it. We finally got to a nice stretch of road, and gunned it, around 80mph he slowed down, being drunk I wanted to win, i kept going to about 130mph. The road turned, i was too drunk to turn fast enough, went into the median and over corrected. Went up the hill on the right side of the road, over corrected again and went down the hill back onto the road. Then slammed into a ditch. Totalled car Under the influence #2. Again luckily nobody else was involved and nobody in my car. But again got picked up for DUI, driving on a suspended, and violating probation.
After all the court fee's lawyer fees, required by judge Alcohol and Drug programs i was required to take, i spent over $10k, not including the $30k for two totalled cars. I also lost my license for 3 years and my insurance is higher than the heavens themselves. I baught a mitsubishi galant 9th gen till i hit 25 and my insurance went down quite a bit for returning customer, thats when i decided i was ready for the RA.
All this happened before i was even 20. I am now 25 and know what i am doing and no longer drink and drive. I know the risks involved
Can you say your son has the same wants/needs to not race, drink and risks? I think not, most teenagers (yes hes still a teenager, not an adult) will do this at some time. Sure its a safe car, But its an equal amount of fast.
If i were you and i was rich, i would give him a brand new car with all the safety features, without the power, just like everyone else said, get a lancer SE AWD. give him a few years to prove himself, its better to be safe then sorry.

I don't agree with that at all. ^. You make youth look like a bunch of idiots. I never drank till I was 18 years old. not a drop. To this day I have never drank and drove. I have always owned sports cars. I work hard for my cars-Genesis/Ralliart/Cobalt.....and would never screw that up. I respect the laws that are in place. I have extensive education. I paid ever cent. I had to work 40 hours a week while in high school and college to pay for everything. I am in my young twenties, no debt, highly repeatable career and do well for myself. Just cause you screwed up, please don't categorize.
i said most and mistakes happen I never said that every person in hs that drinks goes out and drives. I simply wanted him to know it happens, and its something to account for. i commend you on being highly responsible and mature, but not everyone is like you, and you should know that. I was sharing my story and my experiences and in no way should you insult me for sharing my opinion. Im letting OP know that not everything is as it was with you, hence i said id rather be safe then sorry. You want the OP to not have known my story? so IF something like my story happens to his son, you are gonna say oops, that didnt happen with me? Whole point of him posting was to get everyones type of responses.
You want to bash me go ahead i couldnt care less, but do not make it sound like my story doesnt happen, it does, and more often than you know.

Fair point, and I apologize for my harsh initial response. Obviously you can tell drunk driving is a bit of a soar spot. But fair it is a reality, and something that unfortunately has to be continually addressed.
My first car was a 1988 VW Fox wagon *4-speed* GL with 81hp and without a tach that was $2,500 and I thought that it was the bees knees. I loved that car and made it mine.
Even now, 20+ years later, I still have good memories of that car, and it's a pile compared to the list of cars I have had since then.
If I had a 240hp turbocharged car at 17 I probably wouldn't be alive to write this post.
Hell yea, I would have been a pimp at 17 if I had a brand new awesome looking (while sedate) base lancer.

I'm just going to leave this right here:

This kid got an M5 from his dad and decided to take 5 of his buddies out on an air strip and test for top speed. He was posting on the M5 form a few hours before hand about better shifting at 140+. The kid was otherwise an honor roll student and I'm sure his dad thought he was very responsible.
We all do stupid things as kids regardless of the car. I managed some pretty idiotic stunts in an old pathfinder when I was that age. You just don't need to make it any easier for them to get killed doing them.

Ok heres my 2 cents. I got my RA a month after I turned 18 and I am now almost 21. Before this I was driving a 2003 Toyota Highlander for 2 years when I needed to. My parents bought the RA for me as a gift for working hard, getting good grades, a nice job and getting into what they believe is a 'good' college. Besides the initial cost of the car, I pay for all other car related expenses.
I originally wanted to go for an evo x, but at that time it was 12-13k more in Canada and I didn't ask my parents for one because I did not want to test their goodwill any further, nor was I comfortable making them pay more for a car that would not provide me any additional utility, since I know how hard they work. My mother has been working fulltime since I was 2 years old and my father for his whole life around the clock on his personal business.
In the almost 3 years that I have had the car I can only recall one incredibly stupid thing I did which was during the 2nd week of owning the car. I took a suburb street shaped like a chicane at more than twice the posted speed limit. I drifted into the opposite lane and almost went off the road. Through luck or previous skill playing gran turismo (no joke) I didn't panic and kept constant power through and found my way out, but still shaky. If I had panicked I would have put the car off the road and there is no doubt I would have went into an embankment off to the side the side of the road which would have totaled the car or even killed me. After that experience I learned my lesson to respect performance cars. I don't do such stupid things anymore, and whenever I am having then need for speed I take the car to the 1/4 mile.
I think more appropriate questions to ask yourself in order to decide if your son would abuse the car would be: Does he understand the value of hardwork? Does he understand the value of life? Do his friends understand these things as well or are they going to make an otherwise good person do questionable things? I know people older than me who have done much stupider things with their cars, so if you asked me this should not be a question of your son's age but rather his maturity.
