Car PC/Tablet Install

Hello,

I have a 09 RA with MMCS ver 30.99 that came with the car. My MMCS unit does not have a built in hard drive and only has a composite (Red, White & Yellow) input, no USB.

I love the MMCS unit, and have it customized with the Video in Motion hack that allows me to plays videos in the car anytime. I want to take a step further now and have storage/data logging capability, as well as be able to browse the web, stream videos online, and be able to provide a WiFi hotspot in my car. My questions is: having the stock MMCS unit already present, what would be the best and most trusted way for me to accomplish this?

My thinking was I can get a netbook, tablet or small PC installed in my car. That way I have storage on the device. I can buy one of those internet rocket sticks, plug that into the USB slot on the netbook and get data that way. And then finally have a audio/video out from the netbook into the stock MMCS unit input in order to mimic the display on the netbook with the display on my MMCS unit. What do you guys think? Am I overlooking anything? Flaws in my design/reasoning? Got any better ideas? Any help or advice would be much appreciated

you're better off getting a liliput or equivalent touch screen and a small pc. the mmcs won't do touch for the pc. so your going to be trying to do inputs on a keyboard or trackpad.

Yes, but I want to keep my MMCS unit. So the problem is where to place this new tabet or PC? Any design or install ideas? I've been looking online but I can't find anything.

Also, I'm kinda disappointed in the lack of car electronics shops that do good CUSTOM work in the GTA. Does anyone know of any because I can't find anything.. please help!

What would you guys say are the pros and cons of getting a tablet installed (android or ipad) as oppose to a netbook or PC?

the only other "easy" location I can think of is the "cubby" below the HVAC controls. In early cars it was just a big empty cubby. It's probably close to double din in size. In the newer Lancers/RAs/Evos it's that plastic double door contraption below the HVAC controls. Of course you'll have to relocate the lighter and aux in.

You could mount it higher, and move the HVAC controls to the cup holder location in the center console. Someone else on here moved their HVAC there to make room in the dash for gauges...

Do you know where I can find pictures of something like that? Or anyone in the GTA (Ontario) area that would do that sorta work?

I currently have a CarPC molded in my dash, but am toying with the idea of a 2nd screen in that lower cubby myself.

What kind of car-PC did you get? what are the features and options that you have on it? also, what made the decision to go with a car-PC over a tablet or a netbook? Do you have any pictures of the install? Thanks

I was thinking of doing something custom with a mac mini. but I think I am just going to do a the pioneer Appradio 2. it looks like a much easier and nicer way of doing it.

LOL, yep.. the link does work

Guys, what would be the advantages of getting a car PC vs a tablet? If I get a car PC can I get it wired directly to the car ECU and use it for data logging/tuning purposes? can this also be done with an ipad or an android tablet?

This thing seems to have the same functionality as the stock MMCS unit already present in my car, which I do not plan to get rid of

I think I want something that gives me usage outside of that:

1. Storage (music, movies, videos, files, data logging)
2. Be able to provide data via internet stick and create in-car hotspot
3. Possible connection to the car ECU for tuning purposes

that is what the Iphone adds to it, it is all stored on your iphone/ipod. the data is if you have a iphone with a data plan

I thought it could connect via the Iphone and show ecu info but I must have mixed that up with another device. been looking at to many things recently.

I think it is close but not quite what you are looking for.
