Initial mods that don't require a tune? 2011 Ralliart
What up forum!
I've got a 2011 Ralliart Sportback. Had it for just over a month now.

So far I love it. Good power, smooth shifts, but jerky at low speeds. My previous two cars were an '04 WRX sedan (automatic), and '08 Volvo S40 t5 AWD (automatic). One thing that sucks is car insurance is $500+ more than the Volvo. But I can throw my road bike in sportback w/out even removing the front tire - awesome.
I'm toying w/dumping ~$500 into some initial mods to bring the horses up to 275 or so. But just doing some quick research it looks like everything you do requires a tune, which go for $500+ in & of itself.
Are there any initial mods that can gain me some HP that DON'T require a full tune? I have no connections w/any shops. Something like a boost pill, air filter on steroids, whatever. I wouldn't mind doing them myself. I can't rebuild an engine. But I can change a headlight bulb.
And if you've got any suggestions, just let me know how much HP I can expect to gain & how much they'd cost. Thanks for the knowledge.

Not really much that will net you any significant power gains. You could do X-UICP/FMIC to get more throttle response and make your butt happy. A drop-in filter isn't a bad upgrade for a small gain, and gets you some nice turbo noises that the ricer in all of us loves. New motor mounts with firm up the engine, and relay some nice shifts through the powertrain. Catback exhaust is always an option, these will yield more top end power and give you a nice rumble.
I, and probably everyone else will too, highly suggest you invest in a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 unit (around $220? Someone confirm, I'm too lazy to double check) and flash the proper razorlab/richardjh basemap to your car. That will net you the best bang for your buck by far.
Outside of power mods, suspension mods can't hurt. SWIFT springs are a fantastic option over the OEM springs, and they won't degrade your shocks quickly.

I also highly recommend buying a tacrix openport 2.0 and it's actually only $169 here:http://www.tactrix.com/index.php?pag...hk=1&Itemid=53
If you end up getting it do yourself a favor and get the obd2 extension.
So what I would do is get that $162+boost pill $20+evo x IC and licp+ aftermarket uicp and that should be around $500. You could throw in a drop in air filter to for 50 or less.
The biggest difference maker though will be the boost pill and retune with the basemap.

So I'd buy the openport and wtf would I do w/it? I'm looking at this:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/09...st-levels.html
Would I have to do a re-tune for EACH mod I install, EVERY TIME? And I'd guess that I plug in the openport to get the stock levels, then when I add something, I plug it back in to get the new levels, then I figure out what to tweak, then I plug it back in to flash the ROM w/my tweaked levels?
More specific stuff:
-How much HP would I expect to gain w/a non-mod openport ROM flash, no mods, just flashing the ROM?
-How much HP with a new air filter? Give me a link to one you'd recommend.
-HP gained w/boost pill?
-HP w/the Intercooler upgrades? (I'm looking @ this: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/09...tercooler.html) . And why do you say "$20+ evo x IC". Do you mean "$200+"?
Would I have to retune for a new air filter? New IC pipes? Am I ok w/doing the boost pill & air filter & not the IC pipes? Just because that's something that would easily take a half-day/full-day.
Thanks for getting me up to speed quickly here. Really appreciate it.
When doing all this work make sure to purchase an Evo X bypass valve as well. Our Ralliart plastic ones are known to be terrible and the metal evo one can be had for less than $100 on here in the used evo x marketplace.
Thanks guys - DetroitRA & Ralliator.

Intercooler upgrades don't give you a lot of extra power, but a hard uicp does help the throttle response vs. the stock one that expands when you rev. Here's another good read for that : https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/09...g-your-ra.html
A drop in air filter would not require a tune, but a boost pill does. I meant a boost pill costs roughly $20.

Alright.
I ordered the Tactrix openport 2.0
A 2gb micro sd
The extension cable for the openport
And an AMS boost pill f/Amazon
I installed EcuFlash and the Openport drivers on my laptop.
I downloaded the "2011 Mitsubishi Ralliart Stock ROM v3.0 Stock RA + BoostPill upgrade (2011 USDM/CADM - 93 oct - BoostPill - V3.0) as seen here: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/09...t-basemap.html
Now just wait for the stuff to come in, save my stock ROM f/my car before I flash it, and upload the new .hex file using the openport.
I've got this XML file I downloaded too though - what do I do w/that?
And do I have to put my car on a dyno or am I safe to just flash w/the GST BaseMap ROM after I install the BoostPill?
The GST boost pill and AMS boost pill are the same, f/what I gathered, so I'm safe to use the GST BaseMap - PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong.
EDIT: And also, I have a 2011 Ralliart Sportback, just in case that makes a difference.

Get the openport 2.0 f tactrix. $169. Boost pill for ralliart. $18, bought on Amazon. You don't need the extension cable for the tactrix, or the microsd card.
There's a thread on this forum to download the new basemap for free. Download the new basemap for your year/car and download the flashing software called ecuflash.
Install the boost pill. There's a thread for it. It's a ***** to pull out the small 3" rubber hose that's got the stock pill in it. But loosen the clamps with some good small vice grips. It helps to do this when the pipes are still hot, or at least warm. But be careful, and WEAR GLOVES!! I don't care if they are old batting gloves f your little league days. There's some sharp sheet metal in there and some hot surfaces. Please do yourself a favor and wear gloves.
When you get the hose off, use something small, tweezers or a long wire, and push the stock pill out of the hose. Just keep a note of where it is in the hose and what direction it faced in case you want to ever put it back.
After you swap the pill and reattach the hose, connect your laptop w the tactrix. It goes down on the left side of the driver floor. When it's connected it lights up. Open ecuflash and download your current map. Save it as a backup. Then upload the new map that you downloaded off of this forum. When it gets reflashed your car goes nuts and acts like its in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. But when it's done you'll have about 30 more horses and going f second to third gear is almost SCARY.
for $200 and a crash course education in car software and computers this was a real fun project and totally worth it!! It's the only mod I've done, my mileage still stays between 21-25 and I feel a significant difference in power. I haven't hooked it up to a dynamo so 30hp of an improvement is just a guess. You'll definitely feel it.
jlipin3-
thank you so much for breaking down the process in a very simple way. my gf just picked up a 09 rotor glow and i cant wait to start modding it. i will be sticking to bolt ons. evo x cooler and pipes along with the bpv. also i will add a drop in k&n.
this is my first rodeo with a mitsubishi, i am in the process of building my lexus is300 sportback.. but thats for another time and forum.
i have to check out the market place for stock evo x parts. of course when we finally got the car nothing is on sale in my area. ill keep my eye out.
all the way from north chicago area.
