Transmission Problems

I had a blow out on the highway, followed by my spare also going flat a few minutes after. I was able to use the spare from my girlfriends Mazda Tribute but it was a 20" wheel. Obviously this was not a good thing but I was in an emergency. I was able to drive the car 5 miles to a local tire shop and park it. But along the way the transmission warning light came on.

I am certain the light came on because of the wheel not being the correct size. However, after I got a new tire put on my wheel and spare I am still getting the service transmission light. I am wondering if it is possible to damage the differential with what I did? Or possibly I damaged the transmission? Can anyone recommend why I am still getting this light.

Also, the car now pulls to the right slightly (same side as where the oversized wheel was) and also the steering wheel vibrates at 45+ mph. Please help!

UPDATE (10/31/13):

As it turns out, the guys who put the new tires on somehow managed to get three of the same tires and one tire that had a slightly larger wall. This has been the cause of the error lights and steering shake.

However, when I was inspecting the car before I took it to the mechanic I had noticed my serpentine belt had a small notch in it. I did not want this to turn into a problem so I had them replace it while the tried to figure out what was wrong with my transmission. This led to them eventually finding out that the pulleys for the belt had worn significantly and needed to be replaced along with the belt. Also, it led to them finding that my crank seal was leaking, not much to cause a problem in the short term but I don't want to just leave it.
I will be replacing the plastic pulley with a metal one: Hyundai part number is 25287-2C000.

Anyways, thank you all for you advise and input, I hope this thread can provide answers to someone in the future.

it could be pulling that way because of the new tire ive had people come into my work after putting new tire on cause it was pulling to that direction because that tire had much better tread than the rest. and for the vibration did you get your wheel re balanced with the new tire? the tire might not be as balanced as the wheel and has thrown the whole balance off.

You may have done some damage but it's hard to tell. AWD cars HATE different size wheels and tires because of the differentials bind up because one wheel is spinning faster than the other. Also I would highly recommend replacing all tires at once because the same effect of the different size wheels.

To clarify I did replace all the tires on all the wheels as they were being to be worn. So they are no longer different sizes.

It will get absolutely emo because of such a size difference, I was surprised you were able fit 20s on their lol.

Go to Mitsubishi to have the code checked/removed, I'm sure it's just a warning light that's stuck because the diffs would have been working completely different just based on the size difference.

I would also get the entire tyre scenario checked over, rebalanced and everything. Probably do that before going to Mitsubishi so that doesn't come into play when they check the code but yer its a most likely a safety cel more than anything.

Best of luck, let us know the result

Next time, when you get flat tire and use different tire size temporarily, disconnect the fuse for awd located at the lower left driver side.

You'll get the awd warning light but atleast, you dont have to get the acd pump work hard.

Well the car is still pulling to the right (side of the oversized wheel) and also shakes in a repeating pattern at highway speeds. It is very strange because it will shake for about 2 sec then stop for 2 sec and then shake again, just continuing that pattern until I drop below 45mph.

Did you get a wheel alignment done when you fitted the new tyres?

You should
1) rebalance the tires
2) make sure the lugs are torqued down to spec
3) have an alignment done

If that doesn't fix it take it to the dealer and have them look at it.

It's nothing different than having the AWD light on. Both disable the AWD system basically (running in open diffs).
