What is a good performance oil to buy? Im still enjoying my car and driving hard, so I wouldnt mind having some better oil at a little higher cost.

In no particular order:

AMSoil
Royal Purple
Redline

Many car manufacturers are now specifying 5w-20 here in the states to try to improve fuel economy, but to me and many others, this seems too thin, especially for a performance-oriented engine. Without even asking, I can almost assure you that even though the R/A might call for 5-20 here, in europe it's probably 5-30.

I would also certainly stay away from conventional oils (believe it or not, but Mobil1 and american Castrol Syntec is petroleum-based).

theres actually a bulletin that says "The owner is not required to use fully synthetic oil for this vehicle. The owner's manual suggests: 'To better protect your engine and turbocharger, use fully synthetic engine oil.' However the factory fill is petroleum based oil..."

so the car originally came with non-syn oil. jic you really wanted that much detail
Ok, I understand now, then the original oil sticker the dealer put in the window when they sold me the car was to tell me when the next oil service should occur and "suggest" the grade. Not what was put in the car. The chart in the back of the manual was not clear on grade, but the under hood sticker is pretty specific. Once I start to take control of my own oil changes, then I'll shift my oil to the heavier. cool thanks, I just wanted to make sure they were not making a mistake and telling me bull.

I have been lied to by dealers/garages in the past with some pretty catastrophic results and I cringe anytime someone besides me touches my car for service. I know just enough mechanics to be dangerous, and paranoid at the same time.

Is it completely necessary to use sythetic oil in the '09 RA? I don't want to if I don't have to because it is very expensive...

i do not want to start the whole syn. versus regular oil thing, but.............

.....you should use syn.

just shop for it and you can find what you need at a reasonable price.

wal-mart , target , k-mart and lots of places frequently have "oil sales".

i never buy oil when i need it.

i buy when i see it cheap , so i have it when i need to do my oil changes.

Yeah that makes sense. Also I know that sythetic oil changes last longer so in the long run you break even.
