I can tell you that we use K&N type filters on the helicopters we took to the desert and beat the crap out of them and they held up really well! After that I had to buy one for my RA and i love it!

So I just had a thought regarding aftermarket intakes and how they lean out the AFR without getting a tune:

Since the RA recirculates the boost back into the intake via the bov/recirc valve and the RA is expecting the extra air flow from the boost recirculating, would there be any ill effects by using a BOV that vents to atmosphere in conjuction with an aftermarket intake?

My thought is that since an aftermarket intake used with a BOV that recirculates back into the engine is leaning out the AFR mixture to undesirable levels, maybe using an aftermarket intake and a BOV that vents to atmosphere will provide the needed airflow that will keep the AFR in check. The only downside to this theory, at least that I can think of, is that it may not provide an increase in performance.

Any thoughts on this theory?

I'm just thinking out loud.

Hypothetically, yes they counter act each other, but...2 wrongs don't make a right. You would still have to much airflow through the aftermarket intake for the maf to measure, and the bov would have to dump the exact same discrepancy in air pressure to compensate for it, which will vary depending on how much your a boosting...

Crap! You're right, I just realized that there still would be a high AFR while the engine is boosting and the only time AFR would possibly be countered by the BOV, assuming the BOV is compensating enough, is when the excess pressure is vented.

If you have to get a filter i recommend a hks drop in filter. I heard you can hear the turbo a lot more and a little hp increase too.

The HKS seems like a good filter, however it is an expensive throw away filter. They are $45 and are meant to be changed just like a regular filter and not suppose to be cleaned like the K&N

For that I'd find a way of cleaning and reusing or I'd stay away from that filter.

Apparently some people have cleaned it, but probably only once or twice before the foam starts falling apart and going in you engine

Ouch... that doesn't sound too good...
I have the HKS filter and I'm very satisfied with it. It's recommended to be changed at 10,000 miles. Thats about 1 filter in 4 months if you do lots of driving.
$45x3= $135 a year.

Comes down to whether or not you want to trust what the company says about their product. Unfortunately every car will behave slightly different with the same product, so there is no way for anyone here (or at the company) to guarantee you anything. =/
