-20 C Strange whine from engine

Yesterday it was -20 C (-4 F) here in Banff, Alberta, and my 2009 Ralliart was producing an odd whining noise from the engine bay. I thought at first it was the heater motor, however the noise continued after I turned the heater off. It changed in pitch as I either accelerated or let off the gas. This was at slow speeds under 40 KM/H with regular throttle. My friend was with me and heard it, and later that day he heard the same sound in his Evo X MR.
Has anyone else heard this in cold weather or know what it is?

Check belt tension and belt condition. Now if it was a Ford I would say Power steering pump.(they are notorious for this and my F150 is no exception)

It never got to -20 here in Calgary but it was close -18
and I luckily did not experience what you mentioned but if it does happen again stop the car open the hood and pinpoint the source.

Good luck

Doesn't the manual say that when it's really cold, the tranny won't even engage for like 10 minutes after start up until everything warms up?

Either that or that ACD pump/cold issue is really a big problem.

I hope not...otherwise I'm gonna be showing up to work late soon...

I'm usually in a rush so it doesn't get to warm up for more than 30 sec before I'm off. The first cold shift into 2nd gear is usually the roughest. In Auto mode, it happens at about 3000-3200rpm, which feels pretty jerky at low speeds. I shift manually for the first minute or two of driving to avoid this.

Yeah I just roll along through my neighborhood in the morning without giving it much gas otherwise it is pretty rough for the first few minutes when it is that cold outside. =)

It's been real cold lately. In the mornings, I've been waiting til the temp need shows up on the cluster. Winter is almost here!!

+1 For reading the owners manual. The SST clutch doesnt preform well in extremely cold weather until it is warmed up. It takes anywhere from 10 - 15 min for it to warm up.

I know that if you dont let it warm up you wont go anywhere Becasue i live in Minot North Dakota and it was -60 F here last winter and SST didnt even budge. I was late for work... haha

So my recomendation is if you dont want a car starter, atleast get a block heater or get up and start your car early.

Thanks everyone I think it's only happened when I let it warm up for only 2 minutes instead of 5-7. The couple of times I've had the patience to wait for one warmth bar to show up on the display it hasn't occured.
I've been trying really hard to let it warm up.
