Whining sound!?

I have owned my car for almost a month and about two weeks after I got it I have been hearing this high pitch whining sound. It is NOT related to the tranny because the sound doesn't change when shifting and is very random. I has no pattern and is just loud enough to annoy me. It is no longer under warranty and im kinda worried. The pitch does change when accelerating, but doesnt go with engine speed. I am thinking its low on diff fluid or something because it sounds drivetrain related. Any body have this before or have ideas? Thanks.

P.S. Its not the turbo spooling lol

Did you buy this privately? how many miles are on the car?
Try and take a video and post it; because it could be a lot of other things...

This car makes too many sounds to define what your problem is.

I bought the car from a small dealer with 44k miles. Im not sure a video would work, with the windows up its faint but with them down the wind would be too loud. I could try, this may be amusing. I work nights so im crashing out now but I will do a video in the morn, thanks.

^Agreed. Car is notorious for weird sounds and rattles. In fact, chances are that unless it's an unusually loud whining, it may be nothing at all. Video helps though.

Mine has a whining sound that kind of matches your brief description. I've got myself a noisy turbocharger - slightly out of balance, apparently. It's noticable at part-throttle. Sounds a little bit like a high-pitched emergency siren off in the distance.

My car's whine is there on part-throttle accel, but levels out at a certain pitch in line with t/c speed - not engine speed. Throttle off, and pitch drops until it's silent again. Get on throttle, and it reappears with increasing pitch.

Mine started a couple of months after I bought it. One day it wasn't there, the next day it was.

It seems to be a bit worse first thing in the morning when cold - or maybe that's just a time before my stereo vol is up!

Does that description seem familiar to you?

Rich

Edit: Now I read the "P.S. Its not the turbo spooling lol" bit. God, I can be dense sometimes.

wait, 44 miles and your warranty is over?

i'm a little confused because the warranty for ralliarts/evo's here in canada are:

5 - year/100,000 km Powertrain Limited Warranty
3 - year/60,000 km New Vehicle Limited Warranty
5 - year/Unlimited km Roadside Assistance

If I take my foot off the throttle, I can hear this whine. That's the only time I can hear it. I figured with all the stupid noises it makes, that it probably is working fine lol

i sometimes get this whining sound and the tone often changes to a higher pitch when the accelerator is pressed quite firmly and the other cars disappear into the rear view mirror, but when i take the foot off the accelerator, the whining has one loud burst before quieting down...

this, however, is the wife

Stateside it's:

5 years/60k miles powertrain
3 years/36k miles new vehicle warranty
5 years/unlimited roadside assistance

for the Ralliart

Source: Mitsubishi USA site

So, I would consider a differential part of the powertrain so it's still under warranty...

Correct. As long as the car has not passed the warranty offered, then you are good for the rest of it. Even though you are the second owner, you will still have what's left of the factory warranty.

i would suggest taking it to the dealer if you have any doubts or problems and have them look over it while you still have the warranty.

I believe you can buy an extended warranty. If you do choose to; get the powertrain warranty!

cool man thanks. Yea we also bought the extended warranty but factory one doesn't have that deductible.

Yea a little bit off topic, holy crap. I noticed the car had a k&n filter so before looking at it i went a got a paper replacement(GST TUNE). The k&n filter is by far the dirtiest filter ive even seen. So thats weird, but then my boost pill can in so I opened the hood and tried to located my boost pill, there is extra hoses and a hose going to the boost controller thing zip tied pinched, ON PURPOSE! Wtf is going on no factory pill either! Seriously who does this ****. Im so pissed right now. Anyways, I put ams pill in and re-flashed tune. The car is unreal. Ive been driving this thing for weeks with a custom zip tied pill lol. Whining sound!?-2011-05-05_18.56.01.jpg
