Ticking... Normal or Problem

So I know this has been asked before, but I figured I'd share my video and see what people think.. is it the ID 1000 injectors? Or do I have a problem here?

Sounds like injectors... but put a screw driver (metal tip) to the injector and your ear to the handle and listen if the noise is coming from the injectors... simple as that... hard to tell on the video...

It just recently started at this noise level... It's always ticked, but I never noticed it this loud until a few days ago. Then again I noticed it in a parking garage, so maybe I just noticed it because of that and am now being paranoid.

I'll try the screwdriver idea. Or maybe just pull out the stethoscope and see if i can pinpoint it that way.

I really hope it's only the injectors... only because I don't have the cash saved up to build the motor... if I did this would be the perfect excuse to give my wife why the motor needs built. lol

Well stethoscope is a much more percise way indeed, didnt think you would have one... But both will work equally as well. If it is lifter tick, I would personally rip on the car some and then change the oil to see if it helps... Most of the time with what ive seen on non 4g63s is that the noise goes away when running the engine through a really good heat cycle, normally loudest on cold starts when oil has bleed out of the lifters... on top of that, its just noise, its not doing any damage... more annoying than anything else. Good luck with your findings and be sure to report back

Oil bleeding out of the lifters? Does the 4B11 have hydraulic lifters, or manually adjustable tappets?

Some dim memory of mine tells me it's the latter. Isn't there a step in the service schedule about performing an audible check on valvetrain noise, with an option to re-adjust manually?

I know with my last Mitsu 6A12 (high-revving n/a V6), you were supposed to manually adjust tappets every 40,000km. Damn thing was famous for sounding like a tractor.

They are manually adjusted. Problem is they have a stupid way of adjustment.

You have to measure the lash between each cam and bucket follower.
Next you have to remove the cams and bucket followers.
In order to adjust lash, you put new shims under the followers.
Then you have to put all that back together.

If they are not going to have a hydraulic valvetrain, then they should do what Honda does.... Have rocker followers with setscrews in them.

Lmao!! Damn I was laughing hard when I seen this post with the exploding cars hahaha

But I own an evo X with intake and exhaust and it sounds just like mine. It's that loud from the factory nothing to worry a whole lot about.

Yeah, I guess I just never noticed it before. And it does get faster as I accelerate, but not louder. If I drive for a while, or hard, it is a lot quieter when i pull back into my garage.

They're actually so smart that it's not gonna be easy to adjust. In that way, you are force to bring your car to do business with them!
