I have an 09 ralliart that wont start with a new battery. I tried to hand crank the engine by the powersteering pump belt and it turns backwards just fine but doesn't turn forward. Through the oil cap i can see the cam spin fully around as im cranking it. When trying to start the engine no belt will move altough sometimes it spins it a little bit up to the certain point where it was cranked back.
I would appreciate any help.

 

Did anything out of the ordinary occur right before this no-start situation?

 

The car was bought off an auction. engine bay seems to be filled with yellow dust which I speculate is coolant that has dried up (has a sweet smell), there is oil in the engine at normal levels but it's dark. I really don't know what was happening before because it got hit in the back. could the engine be seized?

 

I took the belt off and what do you know. It started right up. seems like something from accessories is broken allowing it to turn only backwards

 

The plastic idler pulleys seem to be a common failure in these motors.
