Fast Front Plate fix-it ticket $5 DIY mount

This How-To is to show you how to make a $5 Front License Plate bracket.

I had to come up with some way to mount my front License plate to get out of a fix-it ticket. The lovely officer only gave me 5 days to get this signed off and mailed in.

I work during the week so stopping at the parts dept to pick up an Evo side mount was not going to work with the limited time frame.

Off to the hardware store.

Parts:

4 x 2" or 2.5" L brackets
2x 2" or 2.5" Straight brackets from the same area (make sure holes match L brackets)
6x 12x 1/2" Bolt
4x 12x 3/4" Bolt
10x size 12 nuts

Total was around $5

1) Connect 1 L Bracket to another using two 1/2" bolts and nuts so that it forms the letter C.
2) Place flat bracket behind the grill mesh and using two 3/4" bolts connect it to one end of the "C" you made in step 1.

Here is one Side complete.

Perform the steps above a second time and mount the bracket in the opposite direction so that both open ended sections of the "C" are facing each other like in the image below.

Then use the two remaining 1/2" bolts and nuts to attach the Licence plate. Use the outer holes so that it hides the bracket.

I used some left over weather stripping I had and attached it to the back upper portion ofthe licence plate for added protection against scratches, you can kind of see them in the shot below.

It does not block the intercooler all that much more than the stock location.

I hope this helps a few people stuck with limited time like my self to come up with a cheap mounting solution for a fix-it ticket or just just because your cheap

Not bad at all! I'd recommend some loc-tite on the bolts to keep it from rattling apart. Also, that will rust in a hurry anywhere that uses road salt. A good, quick coat of undercoat paint or something similar would go a long way without adding much cost.

what is 'Plasti-Dip Trim'? is there a particular brand to look for? would it be appropriate for the aluminum? graphite? style insert in my dash (2006 lancer) that I messed up trying to clean before realizing it was some kind of decal?
and/or might it be right for refinishing the scratched plastic panels like on the door? thanks! -steve
